From the PTA

WELCOME BACK!!! We hope everyone enjoyed their break and are settling back into their “school day routines!”
A belated thank you to our Roosevelt Lanes chairman Sarah Duncan! She did an excellent job chairing our family event during the break! Many families enjoyed coming together for a little competitive bowling and fun times with friends!
We want to again extend our thanks to the Lincoln Park Skate Center for partnering with us to provide free skate admission coupons to ALL of our Arno Families! Rumor has it there were a lot of Caring Cougars on skates utilizing their passes over break! What a great way to burn off some energy close to home!

Wednesday night we celebrated our districts Reflections Winners with a Reflections Tea at the Allen Park Performing Arts Center. The Winning students from each school were honored with medals and certificates. The following were the Winners from Arno:

Sophia Kaloin, Marshall Hegedus, Kaylee Daniels, Morgan Kraft & Charlotte Traz.

Congratulations to all as their art work has now been submitted on the state level for judging. In March the MI PTA will announce the state level winners.

Last night the PTA hosted its FIRST official event of the New Year, our Family Caring Night to benefit the cats and dogs of the Taylor Animal Shelter. Our Chairs, Patty Messer and Jennifer Mayor, did an excellent job hosting our First Arno Family Movie Night! Crafts, tattoos, raffles, food, fun, and “The Secret Life of Pets” were enjoyed by many! We raffled off many prizes including: A Sky Zone Family Pass, Pump It Up passes, and a Hatchimal! Congratulations to all of our winners! This event would not have been so successful if not for all of our ROCKSTAR volunteers, our first time chairs, and all of the hard work of everyone!
Thank you everyone who donated an item to the Shelter, many animals will benefit from your generosity.

Caring Cougar Night

What a great night we had showing what great Cougars we are with pet item donations, making pet treats, face painting, snacks, prizes, and of course enjoying our main feature presentation- The Secret Life of Pets.  Thank to all of our families who came out and enjoyed a night at the movies!!

CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DR. KING

Our district has chosen to be in session on Martin Luther King Day.  This gives us the opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King with our students.

Much can be learned from leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The leadership lessons he gave the world are as important today as they were during Dr. King’s life. Click here now to download this poster in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Congratulations to Mrs. Kalis!

Mrs. Kalis was honored by Zeal Credit Union as one of Metro Detroit’s Hardest Working Teachers!  Her commitment to teaching excellence, donating time to the PTA, School Improvement, various committees,  and other initiatives make this a well-deserved recognition!  Congratulations Mrs. Kalis, you truly make a big impact here at Arno!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Winter conferences are coming up quick on February 15 and 16 from 5:00-7:30 each night.  This conference is slightly different in that not every family generally attends, but is still open as an option for all who would like a conference with the teacher.  Some fast facts:

1. If your classroom teacher is requesting a conference with you, you will receive a notice by Feb. 3.

2. If you did not receive a notice from the teacher, you may still request a conference with the teacher OR decide that you don’t feel a conference is necessary at this time.

3. All classroom links will come from the teacher and be live on the Feb. 3 blog release to sign up for a time on signupgenius for those who need to attend conferences.

4. Report Cards go home on Feb. 3

**Once again, please do not sign up for a slot on signupgenius if a conference is not needed at this point.

Parent Surveys

It’s that time of year already in our school improvement planning where we need to send out surveys to our Arno stakeholders.  You will have the opportunity to take a brief survey from the State of Michigan rating some of your experiences here at Arno.  The survey will be available starting on Jan 27, and end on Feb. 10.  We will be providing the link to it via email blast on that day, as well as posting it in the blog.  If you are unable to access via computer, we will also have sets of computers set up for both parent/teacher conference nights if you wish to take it there.  Giving us good feedback helps us plan better to meet the needs of every Cougar stakeholder.  In addition, students and staff also take a similar survey during the school day.

All of the feedback you provide is then summarized and becomes part of our school improvement plan for the 2017-18 school year.  Thank you very much and look for that link around Jan 27

Arno Fun Fair

Arno’s annual Family Fun Fair is coming up soon!  This exciting event will take place on Saturday, February 4th from 11 am-2pm.  A note will come home soon with more information and a chance to pre-order tickets (they will also be available at the door).  There will be games, raffles, prizes, food, a cake walk and more!  This is a great family event so be sure to put it on your calendar today!

Arno Olympics

Save the date- the Olympics are coming to Arno on Jan 26 starting at 5:30.  Look for more info in next week’s blog post.

🎅🏼🎅🏼”He’s making a list! Checking it twice…!” 🎅🏼🎅🏼
We hope that you all made the “Nice List” this year and have enjoyed your first four months at Arno!
Just a few reminders of some of our events that are taking place over the break:
❄❄️Family Fun Bowling Night at Roosevelt Lanes on, Tuesday, December 27th from 3-6pm. 3 hours of bowling, 2 slices of pizza, pop, and shoe rental all for the bargain price of $11 per person. Come on out and join us for some fun!
❄❄️Winter Break Roller Skating at the Lincoln Park Skate Center. Check your calendars and plan a “Skate Date” with some friends! It’s all free and courtesy of the Lincoln Park Skate Center and your PTA! Bring your pass and your energy and have some fun!
❄❄️Our Family Caring Night on, Thursday, January 12th, will kick off our New Year of fun with a movie night to benefit the Taylor Animal Shelter. This is a free event, but we will be accepting donations for the shelter. Fun, friends, snacks, crafts, raffles, and face painting! Look for more information to come home and continue to check the Facebook page and school blog.
The PTA has had some wonderful successes this year because of all the love, support, and generosity of our Caring Cougar Community. We hope that the remaining months ahead are just as fun and successful as these first few have been for all of us. Our current team has instituted a lot of different ideas and programs this year and our events have been well-received by our Community and we couldn’t be more grateful for the support and proud of all of our accomplishments as a team and school community.
Please continue to join us! Your presence, support and participation is what makes all of this happen and a truly special experience to take part in! Thank-you to all the families and volunteers who helped make this year so successful and to all of our members from the bottom of our heart’s! We are blessed to have some amazing teachers and administrators to partner with us and inspire the children. You continuously raise the bar and we appreciate your exceptional gift you offer to our community!
It has been a true pleasure and privilege to serve as your PTA board. Arno is a special school and we are ecstatic to work with you during the second half of our school year and see what transpires in our cougar community in 2017!
We hope that your pride continues to shine brightly in the upcoming New Year and that you have a wonderful Christmas Break and a safe, happy, and healthy New Year!
A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Your PTA executive board

Keep Skills Sharp During Winter Break

Help your child stay at the top of his learning game during the holiday vacation — no flashcards involved!
 LEARNING BENEFITS
Hover over each Learning Benefit below for a detailed explanation.
Creativity
Literacy
Compassion

Winter break means a well-deserved reprieve from homework and daily obligations. But before you know it, the holidays will be over and it will be back to the bus stop. To prepare for a smooth re-entry and a successful second semester, don’t let school skills like reading, writing, and math slide completely during winter vacation. Try these family-friendly activities to keep skills sharp:

  • Read for pleasure. Whether your child is in the mood for holiday stories like The Night Before Christmas or the newest installment from his favorite series, winter break provides the perfect opportunity to stash schoolbooks and read for fun. Encourage relatives to give books as holiday gifts or gather in front of the fire (big kids too!) to take turns reading from classic tales.
  • Cook up an easy lesson. Invite your child into the kitchen to help you whip up a special dish — from Christmas cookies to potato pancakes. All of those half-tablespoon and quarter-cup measurements are great practice with fractions.
  • Write thank-you notes. Penning notes of appreciation to gift-givers teaches gratitude and helps polish writing and spelling skills. Not sure what to say? Check out our thank-you note template for wording. One final tip: a mug of hot cocoa can make this task feel more festive!
  • Make the most of car rides. Turn the drive to or from a holiday get-together into an opportunity to practice letters and numbers. You can look for license plates from different states, try to find the alphabet on the license plates, or count the number of red (or white or green) cars you see.
  • Maintain reasonable bedtimes. With no school to get up for in the morning, it can be tempting to let kids become night owls. A few days before school starts up again, ease back into the regular bedtime schedule so your child can start the year bright-eyed.
  • Ask for grocery list assistance. Have your child help choose what to buy, decide how much you need, check your supplies to see what you’ve already got, write or draw pictures on the list, and sort coupons.
  • Let kids help with online shopping. Need a last-minute gift for Grandma or Uncle Joe? Log onto your favorite shopping sites and let your child help you select presents. This helps children work on their computer and research skills.
  • Have a family game night. Chances are many of your family’s favorite board and card games reinforce skills such as counting, reading, and drawing. Gather the group to play games you usually don’t have time for on school nights.

Cell Phones in school

Cell phones have become quite a distraction in class. School policy is that cell phones must be OFF and inside backpacks if brought to school. If a cell phone is discovered throughout the day, it will be dropped off in the office for a parent to come claim at the end of the day. If you need to contact your child throughout the day in regard to dismissal arrangements, please contact the office and a message can be relayed to your child.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

From the PTA

“Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!”

Or as Arno Students would say, “SNOW DAY! YAY!”

Speaking of Snow Days,  we hope that everyone enjoyed theirs this past Monday. The weather is definitely preparing us for the official start of Winter, so please ensure that you send your student(s) to school dressed properly: Winter Coat, hat, scarf, gloves, snow pants, boots (and a change of shoes, especially on gym days)!

Speaking of snow and chilly weather, the PTA has some fun INDOOR events coming up next week and during the Winter Break!

Next week, we have a fundraiser at the Texas Roadhouse in Taylor, on Wednesday, December 21 from 3:45-10 pm. Flyers will be sent home early next week and do need to be presented at the restaurant when ordering in order for the PTA to get credit (10% of your bill gets credited to our PTA).

During the break, the Lincoln Park Skating Center has given the PTA free passes for up to four people during any public skating event for all of our students at Arno to enjoy! They have also included a free calendar of their events during the break for our convenience. What a wonderful gift from the Lincoln Park Skating Center!

Our last planned event is a Family Fun Night at Roosevelt Lanes on, Tuesday, December 27th from 3-6 pm. This afternoon of fun includes: 3 hours of bowling, 2 slices of pizza and pop, and shoe rental all for the Bargain Price of $11 per person! RSVP’s will be coming home this week for the event!

Please return them as soon as possible, so we can plan appropriately with Roosevelt Lanes for our event!

We hope that everyone has a fun and safe weekend! Stay Warm!

Please remember to check our Facebook page for updates and reminders!

Announcement of New Superintendent

The Allen Park Board of Education is proud to announce the selection of Mr. Michael H. Darga to lead the district as its next Superintendent, replacing retiring Superintendent, Dr. John J. Sturock.  Mr. Darga was chosen from a highly qualified field of candidates following a very rigorous selection process conducted over the past few months with the assistance of the Michigan Leadership Institute.

The Board would like to express heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed time, energy and thoughtful input to the Superintendent qualifications, stakeholder sessions and interview process.

We are excited to begin the next chapter for the Allen Park Public Schools, and believe that Mr. Darga will continue to move the district forward in our efforts to provide a quality education for all students.

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER

Brr!  The weather has turned chilly!  Although our afternoons are often warmer than mornings, please send your child to school with a warm coat daily.  We definitely want to take advantage of the sunny fall weather to play on our playground and with our fun new equipment, but need to be dressed appropriately!  It’s always a good idea to dress in layers to adapt to changing temperatures.  Please label your child’s jackets and sweaters so they can find their way back to their owners if left somewhere.  The Lost & Found is currently full of items needing to be claimed!

ART OF GIVING PROJECT

Art Drop Boxes will be available in our office for collection of this project:
The ART OF GIVING is a project that is very near and dear to my heart, just as ART is at the HEART of Blake. Although this project is very personal, with all of us working together, it has the potential to impact and uplift so many others.  I began the Art of Giving when my boys were small. The Bowman boys, like many chronically ill children, spent countless hours in the hospital. They tire of the many, often painful, procedures; however, these procedures are their means of survival. Art therapy is a very vital part of these children’s care. It creates a positive direction, allows them to express their emotions about their health, and is a different approach to cope through ART.  I have had the rare opportunity to see first hand how amazing art therapy is for these children; please consider joining us during our Art of Giving event, the reward is priceless. ~ Kim Bowman

Thank You!

On behalf of Arno staff, we wanted to thank all of our caring families for coming out to conferences this past week.  We know that research puts a heavy weight on the importance of parental involvement in school, and that’s why a strong parent/teacher connection is so important.  It was great to see so many of our families come out and enjoy time learning about all the wonderful accomplishments your child  is currently working on.  As we move forward, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher should you ever have a question or concern.  Thanks for being a great partner!

Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences this fall will be taking place on Nov. 30 (5:00-7:30) and Dec. 1 (12:45-7:30), Dec. 1 is also a half-day- 11:40 dismissal.  This year for conference sign-up, we have once again chosen to use a web based tool called signup genius.  Many of you may be familiar with it as a number of Arno staff and the PTA have used it in the past for various events.  Using this tool allows you to have the ability to choose times that are best for you while looking over the slots available, as well easily scheduling siblings.

Each teacher at Arno has their own signup genius link to click and choose times.  All links are the blog just below, and you will get the same link from your teacher as well next week.  Simply choose the teacher and click an available slot, then go and repeat for siblings in other classrooms.  We will have a computer available in the office if you are not able to access the program.  There will not be any paper sign up this year

Remember:

  • To be on time
  • If you have more than one child, please don’t schedule back to back as you will need travel time to move around the building

Please select your child’s classroom teacher(s) below to sign up for a conference time.  For the fall, we encourage all parents to attend conferences.

Mrs. Jensen’s class began their weather unit this week.  They worked hard in small groups to read about different types of weather.  After they were done reading the books assigned to their groups, they made anchor charts to describe the type of weather.  On the anchor charts, the students also informed us on what we wear and fun activities we can do when experiencing those types of weather.

Now Collecting…

Arno has a number of items that we collect to benefit the school and other organizations.   Please see below for more information.

Pop Tabs– Maddy Every (4th grader) collects pop tabs for a very worthy cause- The Ronald McDonald House.  Please consider collecting and sending in your pop tabs to help- Great job Maddy!

Box Tops –  Box Tops are found on hundreds of products.  Please clip the dotted line and have your child turn them into the office.  When they are submitted, the school earns 10 cents for each one received.  Over the past few years, Arno has been averaging approximately $1000 per calendar year.  This money is used to purchase merchandise and help to pay for special events that benefit the entire school.

Labels for Education- Campbell labels are found on many different products,  usually soup labels.  On those slips it will say either 1 point or 5 points.  Please cut the area out with the UPC code as well as the point value.  When they are submitted, we have the opportunity to obtain merchandise from a catalog that can be used in our school.

Traffic Pattern

Parking/Drop-off

As we all need to get our children to school, safety is always the primary concern.    We will do our best to help ensure an orderly drop-off/pick-up daily, but we need your help in making that happen.

** No child should run across the street to get into a car.

**School traffic flow MUST go clockwise around the school. Make sure that your passenger door is ALWAYS closest to the curb.

BE SMART! BE PATIENT! BE CARING! BE KIND!!! BE RESPONSIBLE!!

Voice Volunteers

Arno is still in need of Voice Volunteers to work with students throughout the building.  I have attached the page below that would need to be filled out and sent in to the office.  The info sheet does have to run through the state iChat site for a background check.  After receiving approval from the district, you would be scheduled to come in and work with kids  We appreciate all of the support we receive at Arno!!

From the PTA

HERE YEE! HERE YEE!!!

The elections are approaching fast just like our weekend! Please remember to get out and VOTE!!

Speaking of voting….I vote that we have more cool assemblies like the Rory the Lion Leadership Assembly we had on Thursday, November 3rd! A BIG “Thank You” with much Love from all of us at Arno to Mrs. Warneck for setting that up for us!
Voting will also be taking place for our annual “Founders Day” nominations starting next week. Founders Day is a way for us, as a community and as a school, to show others how much we appreciate and respect all the hard work someone has done “Above and Beyond” in various categories. Some of these categories include: Outstanding Educator, Business, PTA Member, etc. Applications will be available by link on Arno’s PTA Facebook page and an email link to members on Monday, November 7th. Paper Copies of all applications will be available in the main office Tuesday, November 8th. You can submit your completed application by email or turn into the office in a sealed envelope marked “Founders Day PTA”. Voting will take place at our next PTA Meeting which is scheduled for Thursday, December 8th at 6:30 pm in the Arno Cafeteria. Members present at that meeting will have the opportunity to vote on all the nominee’s. The winners of each of the categories will be notified and acknowledged at the Founders Day District Banquet being held on February 22nd at 6:30 pm at Crystal Park Banquet Center. It’s important as a community to show those who do take the time to go above and beyond how much we appreciate them and all the things they do. We can be quick to judge and leave bad reviews, but oftentimes we do not always show our gratitude, so please consider setting time aside to submit a nominee.
Our Reflections campaign is coming to an end soon. Set some time aside to show us what your story is and get your submissions in by, Friday, November 11th.

Mother/Son Night out is approaching! Flyers were put into teachers mailboxes today and should be coming home with your student(s). Please get your RSVP’s in soon. We have had a tremendous amount of support from the community and we hope you can join us for this fun event!

Save the date for our first Book Fair of the school year! Monday, November 28- Friday, December 2nd our Media Center will be transformed into a Buccaneer Book Blast! Look for more details to come in the following weeks, as well as, a sign up genius to volunteer and earn free scholastic dollars while doing it.
Thank you to everyone for all your support. Have a Great Weekend and we look forward to seeing you at a meeting soon!
Remember to check our Facebook page, emails, and the school blog for information.

Happy Halloween!

  • Monday, October 31st.
  • 10:30 AM.  Halloween Parade.  Outside
  • Classroom teacher will communicate with you if they are having any events to follow

Costumes:

  • Students will wear their costumes to school.
  • All costumes must be school appropriate
  • No play guns or weapons of any kind
  • Please do not allow your child to wear a mask.  Masks tend to slip causing a possible trip and fall accident / injury.

Parade Path:

  • Weather permitting.  We will be outside for our parade.  Our plan is to start the parade with our Kindergarten classes.  We will walk through the building picking up each class and exit door  # 8(5th grade doors).  We will walk around the inside perimeter of the playground fence, and then down the way to enter through the office main door- the best place to stand and watch would be on the outer perimeter of the fence, and along the sidewalk to the office.    Each class will then proceed back to their classrooms

It’s beginning to look a lot like…. Halloween

From the PTA

Happy Friday, Caring Cougar Families!

It is the weekend before Halloween and all the kids are getting excited for….CANDY and Dressing up! Please be safe out there while you’re having fun collecting all your goodies!
Our Gumball Drive is at its end and it looks like we have a BERY tight race between 3 classrooms- Ms. Stanley’s Kindergarten Class, Mrs. Martinchick’s First Grade Class (there’s that name again…didn’t her class all ready win something? HeHeHe), and Ms. Amonette’s Second Grade Class! Results will be posted later this morning, so make sure to ask your students who won!
Our Limo Ride and Lunch with Mr. Zielinski has been scheduled for our top Grade Level Winners of the Fun Run! This grand and glorious escape (we meant, lunch) will take place Wednesday, November 2nd from 10:30 am-12:30 pm!
Our Spirit Wear is in and distributed! We are very sorry for the delay, but we had an overwhelming amount of orders and some last minute orders that we wanted to make sure got processed. We did not anticipate it taking as long as it did, but we’re sure the next round of orders will be handled more efficiently! Look for new products being offered just in time for Christmas!
Thank you to everyone that attended our first Skateland Skate Night of the year! Everyone had fun skating, falling, and even dancing their way through the night! A BIG THANKS to Tania Bassett for chairing this event! She did a tremendous job and we look forward to working with her again at future events!
We had a lot of families show up to our first “Family Dinner Night” at Applebee’s! Thank you so much for supporting your PTA by dining out! We hope everyone enjoyed their visit!
Our Reflections Contest is in high gear! “What Is Your Story”? Everyone has one, let’s show the world yours! The contest ends November 11thwhen entries are due.
Our Richard Paul Anti-Bullying Assembly took place yesterday, Thursday, October 27th. We hope everyone took home some good information as to how to prevent and stop bullying!
Our next PTA Meeting will be held this Thursday, November 3rd from 6:30-730 pm in the school cafeteria. Come on out and check us out! Learn what’s going to happen with the Fun Run Money we raised. Sign up to volunteer at an event or even chair one! As always…FREE Babysitting is available!
