Health Corner

Winter time brings some additional challenges to school aside from the cold weather.  Below are a few reminders for helping our students to stay safe and healthy at school:

  • Wash hands frequently — especially after using the restroom, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Cover your cough — cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue.
  • Encourage children to put hats and gloves into coat sleeves when hanging among others’ items.

Please report all cases of communicable illnesses or circumstances to our office when reporting your child’s absence.

** Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.

** Students who have been treated for head lice must have a head check in the office before returning to class, even if the head lice was discovered over the weekend.

By reporting these things to our staff, we can limit the spread of germs and other things.  The two attachments contain additional information that may be helpful to you.  Please know that information related to illnesses is kept confidential.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER

Brr!  The weather has turned chilly!  Although our afternoons are often warmer than mornings, please send your child to school with a warm coat daily.  We definitely want to take advantage of the sunny fall weather to play on our playground and with our fun new equipment, but need to be dressed appropriately!  It’s always a good idea to dress in layers to adapt to changing temperatures.  Please label your child’s jackets and sweaters so they can find their way back to their owners if left somewhere.  The Lost & Found is currently full of items needing to be claimed!

Board Recognition

Last blog we let our families and staff know that our social worker, Sandy Bennett, was awarded a Career Achievement Award at her state conference.  During the November Board meeting, she was recognized for her efforts and her outstanding work she does to service our Allen Park students, parents, and staff.

The Career Achievement Award is a prestigious honor, not annually awarded by MASSW.  In fact, there have been only 5 in the last 70 years and our Sandy is now one of the elite!

This award is reserved for recognizing an individual who has demonstrated exemplary services as a School Social Worker over a significant period of time, has developed creative programs, services, and/or interventions to improve or enhance the lives of children and families in the State of Michigan.

Congratulations Mrs. Bennett!!

Congratulations Sandy Bennett!

While attending the annual Michigan Association of School Social Workers State Conference in Kalamazoo, our very own Sandy Bennett was awarded the Career Achievement Award at the banquet last evening – it was a complete surprise to her!

Sandy Bennett has contributed significant time and effort to advance the visibility and viability of School Social Work throughout the State of Michigan through involvement on MASSW local and state level Boards, political action and advocacy and teaching, instructing and mentoring School Social Work interns and School Social Workers.  Sandy’s career spans 4 decades and she has been with Allen Park Public Schools for over 20 years.  Sandy’s professional contributions have been significant and far reaching, spanning across the State of Michigan and extending throughout the entire Midwest Region; devoting innumerable hours in support of her beloved profession of School Social Work.

It is with a tremendous amount of pride that we congratulate Sandy on this prestigious and well-deserved honor.  Please join the Allen Park Board of Education on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Allen Park High School, Large Group Instruction Room, as we honor and celebrate Sandy Bennett!

Building up to Kindergarten

We had a terrific turnout for our second annual Preschool meeting with parents and their preschooler.  This is an event that is open to all of our local preschools in the area and is designed to give parents a better understanding of the skills that their child will need as they enter kindergarten next fall.   We had amazing 41 families from various preschools attend the event, more than double the amount over last year.

A huge thanks to our Kindergarten staff , Nickie Stanley, Cristina DiCarlo, and Megan Johnson, for an excellent job on helping our future kindergartners be better prepared for next year.

The presentation slides can be seen below- there will be Part 2 of Building up to Kindergarten in the winter.

Therapy Dogs arrive for Arno literacy program

The main objective of this program in our Y5 and 3rd grade classroom is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading.

By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.

MSTEP Parent Guide

M-STEP Results: What Families Can Expect

This past spring, Arno Elementary students in grades 3-8 took the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress). Final results from the  M-STEP are now available and thanks to technology improvements and online testing, our district has much earlier access to data that is also a more precise measure of learning.

The purpose of these state summative assessments is to see how close our students are to reaching Michigan’s new higher standards in English language arts and mathematics.

This year’s test scores will build on the new baseline set in 2015 when the M-STEP was brand new. This year’s results show an improvement in most areas,  we expect that as students gain more and more experiences with online assessment and as our instruction adapts to Michigan’s higher standards, our scores will rise over time. We encourage families to remember that state standardized test scores are just one measure of student progress and to keep them in perspective.

What happens next?

Our staff will spend time reviewing the 2018 M-STEP results to find where we are having success, and where we see areas in which to improve. The test results also will reveal which groups of students are doing well, and which will need more or different kinds of support.

Families are encouraged to review the M-STEP Parent Report and learn where your child might need additional support. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher and learn how together you can target academic support where it’s needed most.

The Michigan Department of Education has developed a useful document called Student Testing: What Parents Can Do to Help Students Prepare that is now available for download on the M-STEP web page (www.michigan.gov/mstep).

Please look for your child’s Parent report coming soon around Sept. 28.

Traffic Pattern

Parking/Drop-off

As we all need to get our children to school, safety is always the primary concern.    We will do our best to help ensure an orderly drop-off/pick-up daily, but we need your help in making that happen.

** No child should run across the street to get into a car.

**Help our traffic issues around school by parking a block or so away and WALKING your child before and after school.

**School traffic flow MUST go clockwise around the school. Make sure that your passenger door is ALWAYS closest to the curb.

BE SMART! BE PATIENT! BE CARING! BE KIND!!! BE RESPONSIBLE!!

Important info related to school illness

This school year we have  students that have immune issues to illnesses.  Please be sure to keep your child home if they are experiencing contagious symptoms, especially if they have a fever.

Thank you for your help.

Mad Science

We are happy to be partnering with Mad Science to bring an after school experience to Arno students who wish to dive deeper into the fun of science.  A flyer will be sent home detailing the specifics of this class- which is tuition based ($85 early, $90 later) and will be held at Arno after school once a week- for 6 weeks.  Mad Science did provide for us a free science assembly to which was a lot of fun and motivating towards science!

Therapy Dogs for Reading

Coming soon- Arno students in Mrs. Wrneck’s, Mrs. Haskin’s, and Mrs. Jensen’s room will have an opportunity to read to a therapy dog.  There is research that supports the connection to confidence boosting for kids when they can read to a four legged friend.  If the program is successful, we will expand it.  The dogs are very local (3 blocks away) and are fully licensed therapy dogs that even visit places like Children’s Hospital to cheer up patients.  Permission slips will go home in those classrooms.

Vocab Program

Arno Elementary is taking on a new innovative angle on learning vocabulary words. In addition to their classroom work on vocabulary, students will also watch a vocabulary segment on Arno’s Morning Broadcast. However, these segments feature not only students, but highlight teachers, staff, parents, community and business members, government officials, and friends of Arno, both new and old. The students will enjoy visually learning from a new guest speaker teaching them Marzano’s English Language Arts Vocabulary words while utilizing graphic organizers to cement learning

Journeys

This year AP Elementary buildings started a new reading program titled “Journeys”.  The program encompasses the very best in reading practices and we are excited to roll out with our students.

PBIS

Arno was alive with activity last Thursday as each class made their way around the building and outside to attend PBIS expectation stations in Assemblies, Bus, Office, Hallway, and Cafeteria.  Our Cougars were great listeners and learned some important information about building expectations and positive behavior.

Mr. Peace

Arno was once again treated to Mr. Peace (compliments of the PTA), this time it was the very important topic of bullying.  He shared stories, quotes, and inspiration to our Cougars.  Please be sure to ask your child what they learned about being kind and always looking at other people’s heart first.

Staff Changes for 2018-2019

It is my pleasure to welcome Megan Johnson and Sara Bleau to Arno Elementary.  Sara will be filling our ECP preschool program and Megan will be joining our dynamic kindergarten team this year.  These teachers come to us with multiple experiences and bring with them the skills necessary to provide Arno students with an excellent education.  Please read  and  biography below for more on our new additions.

Also in a new role this year- Kim Dowd, former Parapro working with at-risk students at Arno, is now our new student advocate, joining Cathy Anderson in the office.  we are very excited to welcome Kim to this new role at Arno and congratulate her for her new position. You can also find out a little more about Kim below.

Mrs. Sara Bleau, ECP Classroom

Hello, my name is Sara Bleau, I am the new ECP teacher this year at Arno. I recently graduated from Baker College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. In addition to being a certified K-5 teacher, I have an early childhood special education endorsement. Prior to my student teaching at Arno I was a math interventionist for a neighboring school district. When I am not teaching I am most likely enjoying the great outdoors with my family. I am so thankful for the opportunity to be part of the Arno community! I am looking forward to building lasting relationships with my students and their families throughout the year!

Ms. Megan Johnson, Kindergarten

Hello! My name is Ms. Johnson, and this is my first year teaching at Arno Elementary.I graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education this past spring. I have been substitute teaching, volunteering, and coaching with Allen Park Schools for the past 7 years.  I enjoy helping students become successful learners and feel proud of their accomplishments.  I am excited to teach in the elementary school that I went to as a child.

Mrs. Kim Dowd, Student Advocate

Hi, my name is Kim Dowd and I’ve worked with children for several years throughout my Allen Park Schools career.  I have been a one on one aide to several different special needs children, had experience working in the PPI classroom as a parapro.  In 2012 I was became part of the Arno family working as an instructional aide. I’ve gotten to know and love all of the teachers/staff as well as the children and their families.  I’m not completely new to the office as I’ve enjoyed filling in when needed and look forward to seeing everyone this fall!

Thank you Cathy Gorski- We will miss you!

Cathy Gorski, although not retiring will be sorely missed here at Arno as Cathy takes on a new role as Reading Coach over at Lindemann Elementary.  Cathy has served Arno with distinction in her Title I program serving our at-risk youth.  Her efforts with our kids has made such a tremendous impact on their lives, and our building and we are proud to call her an Arno cougar.  We will miss you Mrs. Gorski- Good luck in your new role!

Thank you Mrs. Desjardins- We will miss you!

Michelle Desjardins, a fixture at Arno for over three decades, made her decision to retire this summer.  Michelle’s presence in our office was a comfort to our many students who needed assistance, a band-aid, or just needed someone to talk to.  She was such an asset to our whole staff, stepping in where needed, helping out a co-worker, or going out of her way to make someone’s day.  Her relationships with our staff, students, and parents will be missed!  Congratulations Mrs. Desjardins., we will always be proud to call you a Cougar forever!

Thank you PTA!

If you have not had the chance yet, please stroll by and check out the playground structure that was purchased by the PTA from all of our donating families!  What a great way to show our kids just how generous our Arno parents are in making this possible!  This was mainly funded by the Arno Fun Run, so please be on the lookout for the new information for this year’s Sept. 28 Fun Run event.  Your generosity truly counts!

From the PTA

Welcome Back! Hope you’re ready for a fun filled year! The PTA would like to welcome back all of the Arno Caring Cougars!

Just as a reminder, student teacher assignments will be emailed and not posted at the school this year. You can also view it through the Parent Portal on the Allen Park Schools website or the Mobile app.

We sell Spirit wear at all of Arno’s events!  And If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please let one of our wonderful PTA board members know! 3rd Grade Reading Law

The legislature passed what is known as the Third Grade Reading Law last school year.  This law has many moving parts, see below for more info:

  • K-3 parents have to be notified if their child has a reading deficiency starting this year
  • Any student below grade level on reading (deficient) must have a school and home reading plan for success
  • By 2019-20 school year, any 3rd grade student one year or more below grade level as measured by a state assessment will be retained.  This year’s second graders will be the first group in third grade to be affected.
  • There are a number of ways to exempt the student from retention ie. parent waiver, shows better results on another local assessment, etc.

As a result of this law, we now are required to issue reading plans (IRIP) that shares information on testing, a plan, and what parents can do at home for K-3 students.  These are issued out in the fall, winter, and the spring for those students who are below grade level as identified in our standardized assessment, NWEA. If your child is to receive one in the fall, you will be notified at the first parent-teacher conference.   As always, we will provide quality instruction and interventions for all of our Arno students.  If you would like more information, please visit: http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2016/10/08/third-grade-reading-retention-bill-now-law-what-parents-need-to-know/

Line-up Procedures…

Line up procedures will remain the same as last year with indoor lineup with the exception of the first day of school– students will line up outside the grade level doors.   Indoor lineup will start on the second day of school.

  • The first day of school, line-up will be OUTSIDE their assigned door.
  • Indoor line-up starts September 5th
  • Outside doors are closed and will be opened at 8:20 daily for students to enter for indoor lineup, not before that time, however
  • Breakfast doors still open at 8:05
  • Students should still report to their assigned outside door to enter the building
  • Parents will not permitted to enter with students/stand in the halls- normal protocol to sign in with the main office does not change
  • Students will enter the classroom at the 8:30 bell after waiting in the hall

5 Ways to Have a Great First Day Back to School

You’ve read other lists, but here’s the REAL advice from ACTUAL teachers on how to prepare yourself and your child for a new school year:

  1. Encourage a work/play balance. Most parents don’t know that teachers actually want our students to have a comfortable work/play balance at home; meaning, we don’t want your child’s entire night devoted solely to reading and homework.  GASP!  No, it’s the TRUTH.  Run outside, join a club, play sports, try a new board game, help cook in the kitchen, make a craft, design, build, create – these activities actually help facilitate learning so leave time for them….PLEASE!
  2. How is your child going home?  We will (frantically) ask your child 720283465 times during the 1st day of school, ‘how are you getting home?’ This is by far the most challenging part of the first day; making sure each brand new face gets to their designated place (I’m officially coining that phrase).  After care, bus (including number or color and destination), bus after care, walker, car, or bike rider?  Know your plan and keep it consistent for week 1. Make sure your child feels confident that they know exactly how they’re getting home, whose getting them there, whose going with them (siblings or friends), and what will change if we’re involved in a rainy day dismissal situation.
  3. Start a NEW back-to-school tradition.  Make the first day of school more than memorable for your family.  Go out for ice cream, have a picnic at your favorite park, take a walk on the beach, or enjoy dinner out.  THIS is the beginning of a new year – set goals, make plans, and enjoy the newness of the fresh new year!
  4. Ask TARGETED questions.  Instead of “How was your day?” try these questions that are more likely to solicit better conversation about your child’s school day.  “What skill did you learn in math?”  “What books did you read/listen to?”  “What did you work on in fine arts?”  “Who did you play with at recess?”  Please I beg of you…never, EVER, under any circumstances, email, text, or utter the following words to your child’s teacher….”he said that you guys did nothing today”.
  5. Set technology boundaries.  Implement a time limit (1-2 hours a day) and encourage breaks (every 30 minutes).  Establish rules for who your child can message or chat with and encourage the use of the golden rule while using social media or chatting sites.  You can delete, but you never fully erase the words you type to someone.  Secure your child’s access by blocking inappropriate sites and using Google’s safe search.  Your school district’s website will have teacher approved websites that are designed to reinforce skills taught in the classroom.

Final Blog of the 2017/18 School year

It has once again been my pleasure to be of service to you as principal of Arno Elementary this school year.  We have had such a great year with so much academic success and so many wonderful activities sponsored by our awesome teachers and wonderful PTA that included Daddy-Daughter Dance, Mother-Son bowling night, Bingo for Books, Fun Fair, field day, Caring Cougar food drive, and  of course our latest, the Color Run.  I cannot thank you enough for being a working partner with for your child’s education and bright future.  I encourage you to help your child retain what they have learned over the summer by reading lots of books and making fun trips to the library.

Have a fantastic, safe summer and we will see you in September!!

Steve Zielinski, Principal

*Please look for our first blog as we head towards the end of August.

From the PTA

☀️SUMMER VACATION IS COMING!☀
As our year comes to an end and many of the existing Executive Board Members step down from their positions to allow new faces and ideas help transform the PTA throughout the next year, we just wanted to take a moment to reflect on all of the good things that has happened at Arno over the past 2 years!
☀️First: THANK YOU! Thank you so much for all of the support and patience we have received from the Arno Community during our tenure as PTA Board Members. Your patience through our transition and “growing pains” and with all of the new things we implemented from Spirit Wear to FINALLY accepting online payments for our events cannot be more appreciated! We would also like to thank those that stepped out of their “comfort zone” and helped us Chair/Lead Events because without you, events would not happen! THANK YOU!
☀️Second: Thank you to all of the Staff that has supported us throughout these past 2 years. We threw a lot at you and know that even though it may not always be ideal what we have in store, we knew we could count on you to help us build good relationships and bring new and exciting things to Arno like: our new Kindergarten Play Structure and our Play Works Recess Program! We appreciate all you do and give to the students at Arno!
☀️Finally: Daddy/Daughter Pictures will be distributed at the end of next week! Thank you for your patience!!!
✒️Congratulations again to our 2018-2019 Executive Board Officers! We look forward to your success and ideas!

M-STEP Is Complete

3rd grade wrapped up  their testing and now the whole building is complete this year!  Our Arno students did a tremendous job despite the challenges of testing- we are so very proud of their effort!  Initial scores for the M-STEP will not be available until the fall, we will certainly inform you when the individual reports come out.

High School Jazz Band Visit

We recently had a visit from the high school jazz band that rocked the gym with some great music!  Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders were treated to an awesome start to their day and we loved seeing some of our former Arno kids!
