Hi-Di-Ho Campers! We hope that all of the 5th Grade Students, teachers, and chaperones had a fun and memory filled adventure!

On the home front here, we just have a few reminders:

This is the LAST WEEK that Daddy Daughter RSVP’s will be accepted. PLEASE! Get your spots reserved before time runs out! Make those memories! Dance that Groove on the Dance Floor! Come on out and have some one-on-one fun with your daughter(s). Remember, Friday, March 31st is the last day RSVP’s will be accepted!

The PTA is currently accepting nominations for our Executive Board! If you would like to step up and take on a more “hands on” role in planning our schools yearly events or you just want to be a little more involved, please contact us at : arnopta@gmail.com or send us a private message on facebook to Arno Elementary PTA. Nominations are due BEFORE our next meeting, Thursday, April 13th.

This upcoming Wednesday, March 29th we will be hosting the PTSA Council Meeting at Arno. The meeting will take place in the Media Center at 7:30. All are welcome to attend!

Also this Wednesday, March 29th, we will be holding our next restaurant fundraiser at the Southgate Buffalo Wild Wings. The event runs all day. Please bring the flyer that is sent home with your student(s) in order for Arno to receive 20% from your purchases.

Penny War Results

Congratulations to Mrs. Uhring’s room, they were the 2017 Penny War champions!  As the winners, they will participate in  a movie/popcorn in the building as a reward.  The total raised from Penny War was $2171.98!  That is a fantastic number- way to go Arno cougars!!  The funds earned from our Penny War will go towards purchasing books at Arno School.  Thank you for your support!!

For a good Cause…

On Monday, March 20th, Mrs. Warneck and Marie Pettit-Pokora walked to the middle school to donate 8 inches of their hair to the foundation called Children with Hair Loss. Their hair donation will be used to make wigs for children. We hope more people will join us next year and donate their hair.

APPS Limited Schools of Choice Program for 2017-18

The Allen Park Public School District has established a successful Schools of Choice Program for the past several years and the Board of Education has approved continuation of the program for the 2017-18 school year for Kindergarten through 8^th Grade.  (Requests for specific elementary schools cannot be guaranteed)

Applications are available beginning Monday, April 10 at the Riley Education Center, 9601 Vine.  Completed applications will be accepted beginningTuesday, May 2 through Monday, May 22, 2017 from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. weekdays in the Pupil Accounting Office at the Riley Education Center.  Completed applications must be presented in person to ensure that all information is complete.  A random draw selection will be held on June 1 at 9:00 a.m. at the Riley Education Center.  The draw will determine numerical selection for acceptance of candidates.

We ask that you help us by sharing this information with friends and/or family members who may be interested in having their children become a part of the Allen Park Public Schools Family.

Dr. Sturock Honored

Allen Park’s superintendent, Dr. Sturock was honored Monday evening at his final appearance at a board meeting.  Many special presentations paid tribute to all of his hard work, dedication, and putting students first.  Arno had a great showing with several staff members and students in attendance.  We are very excited and pleased to announce the Arno Media center has now been named to “John J Sturock Media Center” in honor of our superintendent, and recognizing that he was also a former Arno student- Go Cougars!!   Dr. Sturock was also given a plaque commemorating that naming, as well as a shirt donated by the PTA, and two large photos of the sign in place above the media center door.  Mr. Creutz also had an outstanding adapted version of Crosby, Stills, and Nash in chorus with Arno students! Special thanks Emily Quickel, Kaylee Williams, Olivia Kalis, Zach Hillmer , Zoila Davenport, Reina Garza, Abby Obrycki, Sandy Bennett, Diane Peyton, Dawn Watson, Brian Trionfi, Lisa Smalley, Barb Chuby, and Todd Creutz for their contributions to the night.  Way to go Cougars!

It’s the “LUCKIEST” Day of the Year! We hope that some of our Caring Cougar Community were able to catch a tricky LEPRECHAUN! If not, we hope you’re enjoying your day with good food, drink, and people!

This Saturday, March 18th, the PTSA will be holding our annual Spring Fever Craft/Vendor show, Mom to Mom Sale, Bake Sale, Sports Memorabilia and Card Show, and Silent Auction. Please join us at the High School from 9-3 to help support our Community and graduating Seniors. All proceeds help fund our scholarship program

As many of you may know by now from following our Arno Elementary Facebook page, we have 2 State Winners for our PTA Reflections contest: Charlotte Tracz- Primary Music (Award of Merit) and Sophia Kaloian- Primary Visual Art (Honorable Mention). Both girls were presented with flowers and a card from our PTA and will have the opportunity to go to the Michigan State PTA Reflections Reception! Way to Go Girls!

Speaking of winners….our Executive Board has its own “Winner” too! Our Super Awesome Treasurer is part of her company’s (Consumer Energy) ad campaign to support women’s leadership with two other companies: the Society of Women Engineers at U-M and Career Mastered. WAY TO GO JULIE! What a wonderful opportunity to be involved in! Julie also applied for anagrams from Consumers Energy and was awarded $250 for volunteering her time at Arno and in our Community. WOW! What a Rock Star!

Arno PTA Executive Board nominations are being accepted! If you think you would like to contribute to the PTA by taking on an executive board position, please email us or send us a message on Facebook. Elections will be held at our April 13th meeting. In order to ensure our official ballots are correct, we need to be aware of anyone interested in running. If you have any questions about any of the positions (President, VP of Fundraising, Treasurer, or Secretary), please contact us and we will be happy to answer any and all questions.

Dear Mrs. Solak,

I received and reviewed your Michigan Green School activity verification.  Congratulations! Because of the hard work from the teachers, students and parents, Arno Elementary School has received the 2017 Michigan Evergreen School designation, by completing at least 20 energy saving and environmental tasks.  The efforts you made to complete the tasks are very impressive.  I especially enjoyed learning about your composting project, rain barrels and the GLEP field trip.  I urge Arno Elementary School to continue with the energy saving and environmental tasks and hope you encourage others to follow.

Thank you for the well written and organized documentation, I very much appreciate it. 

I will stay in contact with you regarding your certificate, banner, and the 10 year anniversary recognition ceremony, which has been scheduled for May 16, 2017.   Please note that if you already received a banner you will be receiving an annual decal to place on your banner.

• Professional Interview Day at APHS  PID Introductory Letter 2017  PID Commitment Form 2017

APHS is sponsoring the 10^th Annual Professional Interview Day on Wednesday, March 29.  The day provides all 11^th grade students with an authentic experience in job interviewing.  Help is needed from area professionals!  More information is provided in the attached letter and commitment form.  Please feel free to share this information at your place of business or with local friends/family who may wish to participate.

• Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences for APHS & APCS – Wednesday, March 1 from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
• 3^rd Annual Blake Bowman Memorial Golf Outing – Benefits APHS Scholarships for Graduating Seniors (see attached for more details)

Speaking of beautiful….the Founders Day Dinner held at Crystal Park Banquet Center on Thursday night was BEAUTIFUL! So many beautiful people and beautiful words spoken about all of the honorees. Congratulations to all of the winners. You make our community a better place!
A few reminders going into the weekend about our upcoming events….
🌺Our March PTA Meeting will be this Thursday, March 2nd at 630 pm. This is an important meeting for us because we will be submitting a proposal to our members to vote on about how we will distribute our hard earned funds we raised this year. Please consider coming out and placing your vote! As always free childcare will be available.

What a nice evening it was at the Founders Award ceremony and dinner this past Wednesday honoring the accomplishments of many of APPS’ finest.  The PTSA kept under wraps their mystery Life Time Award winner- which ended up being our own Michelle Desjardins!  Arno had a great night and as you can see from the photos below- we were blessed with many award winners!  Way to go Team Arno!

Thank you so much for hosting another drive at Arno Elementary.  We truly appreciate your continued partnership with the American Red Cross.

The preliminary results from Thursday, February 16, 2017 are as follows:

23 donors presented to give blood

29 was our projected goal

22 products of life-saving blood were collected

And the most important number of all-66 patient’s lives will be touched by this drive!

Thank you for all that you do to make these drives a success.  Please let me know how many gifts I should order for our students that recruited a donor.  Please pass along our thanks to everyone that was involved.

Thank you to all who were able to participate in our annual stakeholder survey.  Overall we had 52 participants and have collected some good data to help us improve the overall experience at Arno.  All of the feedback you have provided will also be summarized and becomes part of our school improvement plan for the 2017-18 school year.  I have listed below the “big picture” results- which gives us a quick look, then the staff will dig deeper in the near future.  The bar graph shows an average of scores based on the responses given.  The scale is based on 5 total points.

Don’t miss our Book Fair

Don’t miss out on next week’s book fair featuring a fun camp theme.  There will a huge assortment of great titles and will be the last book fair for this school year.  The book fair will also be open both conference nights from 4:30-7:30.

Parent/Teacher Conferences 

On Feb. 15th and 16th, Arno will host parent/teacher conferences in the evening from 5:00-7:30 each day.  We will once again be using signupgenius for all available slots to be filled.

The spring/winter conferences are meant for those who either received a teacher request for conference OR for parents who still wish to meet with the teacher.  If you feel comfortable with your child’s progress, and you did not receive a teacher request- then you may choose to not attend this round.

For those parents who have a teacher request OR if you would like to request a conference for your child- Please click on the above tab marked “Pages” and look for the Conference Sign Up page that has all teacher links to sign up for a time slot or see below.

Please feel free to come in for the book fair even if you don’t have a conference scheduled.

It’s that time of year already in our school improvement planning where we need to send out surveys to our Arno stakeholders.  You will have the opportunity to take a brief survey from the State of Michigan rating some of your experiences here at Arno.  The survey will be available  Jan 27 to Feb. 10.  We will be providing the link to it via email blast on that day, as well as posting it in the blog below.  If you are unable to access via computer, we will also have a computer set up in the office if you wish to take it there.  Giving us good feedback helps us plan better to meet the needs of every Cougar stakeholder.  In addition, students and staff also take a similar survey during the school day.

Happy Healthy Heart Month! Red is symbolic for love and health and we have many events in the month of February that remind us of these two! 

Our Happy Camper Scholastic Bookfair will be kicking off the week of February 12th. Look for information to come home early next week about our book fair!

On Thursday, February 16th, from 1:00-7:00 pm,  come be a “Pint-Sized Hero” and help your school and community out by donating blood. The American Red Cross will be on hand to host and deliver delicious juice and cookies to those that donate. 

Just because the Lions didn’t make The Super Bowl this year, doesn’t mean you still can’t have a Super Bowl Party! Remember to shop at Kroger with your linked Kroger Card to benefit your school! 

Also, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and maybe your students class is having a party? Kroger has great deals on treats and Valentine’s for friends and maybe even a Special Teacher. If you can’t find what you need at Kroger, Amazon Smiles will probably have what you’re looking for! When you shop at either place, it helps benefit your school!

If you have a 5th Grader at Arno, Mrs. Hool needs your help! She’s trying to put together a photo collage for the outgoing 5th Graders and needs a parent volunteer to help her out. She will provide the photos, but she needs your help organizing them and creating that special, tear-jerking, photo collage. If you’re interested or would like more information about the project, please contact Mrs. Hool at: hool@appublicschools.com.

Parent/Teacher Conferences 

On Feb. 15th and 16th, Arno will host parent/teacher conferences in the evening from 5:00-7:30 each day.  We will once again be using signupgenius for all available slots to be filled.

The spring/winter conferences are meant for those who either received a teacher request for conference OR for parents who still wish to meet with the teacher.  If you feel comfortable with your child’s progress, and you did not receive a teacher request- then you may choose to not attend this round.

For those parents who have a teacher request OR if you would like to request a conference for your child- Please click on the above tab marked “Pages” and look for the Conference Sign Up page that has all teacher links to sign up for a time slot or see below.

Please feel free to come in for the book fair even if you don’t have a conference scheduled.

It’s that time of year already in our school improvement planning where we need to send out surveys to our Arno stakeholders.  You will have the opportunity to take a brief survey from the State of Michigan rating some of your experiences here at Arno.  The survey will be available  Jan 27 to Feb. 10.  We will be providing the link to it via email blast on that day, as well as posting it in the blog below.  If you are unable to access via computer, we will also have a computer set up in the office if you wish to take it there.  Giving us good feedback helps us plan better to meet the needs of every Cougar stakeholder.  In addition, students and staff also take a similar survey during the school day.

It is hard to believe that January is almost over and our next PTA Meetings is upon us! Mark your calendars…Thursday, February 2nd at 6:30 pm in the Arno Cafeteria, is where all the excitement will be! As always, free childcare will be provided, so Come on out and join us!

The Arno Olympics has just passed, so that means that Spirit Week is just around the corner the week of February 6th! If you haven’t purchased Spirit Wear yet, the PTA does have limited spirtwear in stock, so contact us today via Facebook or email to be prepared for all the fun that comes with SPIRIT WEEK!!

Our District Founders Day celebration will be held on, Wednesday, February 22nd at Crystal Park Banquet Center. Tickets will be available next week in the office.

With the arrival of February, it also means that April is not far off and the election of new PTA Officers. If you like what’s been happening around here or want to get involved in the planning of our events and changes, why not consider running for a board position? Please contact us if your interested, have questions, or suggestions for next years team.

Arno Olympics

What a great time Arno students has Thursday evening competing in our annual Arno Olympics.  There were many smiling faces while everyone enjoyed some golf, hockey, basketball, and even a clothes pin drop!  Special thanks to Ms. Ammonette for organizing this wonderful event and to Mrs. Kalis and staff who participated in helping make this a great night!

2. If you did not receive a notice from the teacher, you may still request a conference with the teacher OR decide that you don’t feel a conference is necessary at this time.

3. All classroom links will come from the teacher and be live on the Feb. 3 blog release to sign up for a time on signupgenius for those who need to attend conferences.

4. Report Cards go home on Feb. 3

**Once again, please do not sign up for a slot on signupgenius if a conference is not needed at this point.

4th grade Gets Historical

Our fourth graders have been very busy on their project creation for class.  Their assignment was to focus on an important historical figure of their choice, do research, and create either a puppet or poster board based on that figure.   Enjoy some of the results below:

U of M Visit to 4th grade

The university of Michigan paid a visit to our 4th grade this week teaching them with hands on examples of weathering and erosion.  Their experiences included setting up a city to withstand a flood on a stream table

PREPARING FOR MSTEP

Our staff will certainly ensure that all students are feeling comfortable and prepared before the M-STEP online assessment begins this spring.  However, if your student would benefit from additional practice or opportunities to see what the test will look and feel like, please feel free to visit the Michigan Department of Education’s website for the M-STEP assessment.  On this site, you can find practice that your child can do at home if you’d like!  We work hard to create an environment that is comfortable for our students to show their best work on the test without feeling stressed or worried.  Thank you for anything you may do at home to promote this growth mindset with your student.

ABCD STUDY

Parents of nine- and ten-year old students:

The University of Michigan requests your voluntary participation in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Over 10,000 nine- and ten-year-old children across the country will join this landmark study, supported by the American School Health Association and National Institutes of Health.

Please consider being part of this important study with your child. Participants will be paid for their time, up to $400 per year. If you are interested, go to Arno School ABCD to submit a response card.
