Thank you PTA!

All of Arno joins me in thanking our PTA for their dedication and hard work in raising the bar on what this group can do.  What our PTA has accomplished over the past two years is nothing short of remarkable.  Their willingness to do things different, and bring the digital age into the mix has allowed our PTA to bring in funds to do amazing things, as well as amazing events.  Please check out their post below, Thursday’s PTA meeting vote has given us a brand new kindergarten playscape! Amazing!  Thank you Jenny Sauve, Shannon Mihalik, Nicole Atkinson, and Julie Hegedus for all your service.

Congratulations to our new Board as well, whom was sworn in for the upcoming 2018-19 school year.  Our new Board includes Stacey Sisson, President, Sascha Mansfield, Secretary. and Julie Hegedus continues as Treasurer.  There were no candidates for VP of Fundraising, the Board is actively looking for someone who is willing to step forward and help out.

PTA Board delivers Robots used for coding lessons to Carrie Solak, Tech Teacher.  Julie Hegedus and her husband Gary received a combined grant from Consumers Energy that paid for the entire purchase.  As you can see, there were many smiling faces.

Congrats to our new Board at their swearing in!

President Stacey Sisson, Secretary Sascha Mansfield, and Treasurer Julie Hegedus are sworn into office by Shannon Mihalik.

From the PTA

Happy Friday! Let’s hooe the weather this weekend is kind so all of us mothers can enjoy a wonderful, sunny Mother’s Day!! Happy Mother’s Day to all the hard-working, wonderful moms!

💐A BIG THANK YOU to Stacey Sisson and her mom, Jill, for chairing our Daddy/Daughter Dance that was held at the Prestige Banquet Hall on Friday, April 27th! The girls and dads had a great time dancing to the music played by Scott Piestrak! This event would not be possible without ALL of our wonderful volunteers that helped to make it so successful!

✅Our last PTA Meeting was quite eventful! Our members voted in a new Executive Board, to replace the older, orange playscape with a brand new one (coming this Summer!), two of our PTA Members (Julie and Gary Hegedus), gifted Mrs. Solak with coding robots and mice from a grant they earned from Consumers Energy for all of their volunteer work, the PTA was able to donate 10 Books about ALICE to the school, a new wheelchair and foot rest for the school, and we have our chair for the Fun Run next year!!

Please help us congratulate our 2018-2019 Executive Board Members:

President: Stacey Sisson

VP of Fundraising: Tricia Moore

Secretary: Sascha Mansfield

Arno Gardening Club

Twenty 3rd-5th graders have been meeting on Tuesdays for 25 minutes after school to attend Garden Club and beautify the courtyard.  On our first meeting, we created some goals for the area which included planting some food plants and flowers, weeding, and doing experiments.  We weeded last week and are getting our garden boxes ready for a salad garden.  A salad garden is a garden that grows salad produce (think different lettuces, radishes, etc.) at a faster rate allowing us to enjoy some of our fresh produce before summer vacation.  We are also one of this year’s MSU Tollgate Education Center and MSU 4-H Children’s Garden Cool Kid Plants collaborating classrooms to determine which plants (petunias, geraniums, pentas, and marigolds) attract butterflies.  While we are collecting data through June, Garden Club has requested that the classrooms that are studying butterfly life cycles release their hatched butterflies in our courtyard to encourage butterfly attraction to our plants and add to our data.  Happy Spring!

TEACHER REQUEST PROCEDURE

As we close one school year and begin to plan for the next, student placement is one of our primary considerations.  Our school team of teachers, administrator and social worker spend many hours working together to form classrooms for next year.  We strive to balance classrooms with a blend of students based on academic strengths and needs, social and emotional supports, and the unique personalities of each child.

If you have any special concerns about your child’s placement for next school year, please submit a written explanation of the concern.  For example, “my son is very active and needs to be placed in a classroom where he will have opportunities to move around” or “my daughter struggles with reading and needs a teacher with a strong background in reading”.

We do not/cannot accept any requests for a specific teacher.  Letters requesting a specific teacher will be not be considered.  The one exception is a request for your child to not be placed in a specific classroom based on previous first-hand experience you’ve had with a teacher.  And, that parent concern / issue should be documented in the office.  All such letters are due to the office no later than Friday, May 18, 2018.

This is the same procedure that has been used in previous years and is the same procedure used at Lindemann and Bennie.  If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please feel free to contact my office.

Teacher Appreciation Week Begins Next Week

Please read below if you would like to explore some ways you can thanks your child’s teacher.

Creative Ways to Thank Your Child’s Teacher

With summer near, it’s natural to reflect on all the amazing things your child’s teacher did over the year. So how do you actually show how much that means to you? Check out this list of what teachers reallywant!

“I absolutely love my job as a second grade teacher. My students make each day wonderful in their own little ways,” says Aimee Brenn of Boston. “But when parents show appreciation for my work and dedication, I feel rewarded in ways that my words cannot truly express. It’s those little forms of validation that make teaching such a remarkable profession.”

Beyond a simple, heartfelt “thank you,” these ideas can help your child’s teacher feel the love.

Cards and Letters

The teachers we talked to said personalized letters and cards were by far the most rewarding ways to be thanked. But forget the generic store-bought cards — take time to write something personal. Even better: Get your child involved. You both can write what you liked about the teacher and his or her class.

“A simple note can make me melt!” says Lori Slates Vance, a second grade teacher in Macdonald, Pennsylvania. “My most treasured gift was from a student and her mom. The student wrote me a letter that told me how she liked being in my class. Mom wrote about how her daughter had improved and grown that year.”

“If the cards are personalized, it would be something to hold onto forever,” agrees teacher Katherine Mottola, of Marshfield, Massachusetts. “A child once wrote ‘I love when Mrs. Mottola reads us silly stories.’ Another child wrote ‘I like Mrs. Mottola because she smiles at me.’ So simple but so touching. It’s the little things that make the job so fulfilling.”

Group Gifts

If you want to make a grand gesture, consider going in on something with the rest of the students’ parents — and it doesn’t have to cost a thing.

“One year, my class’s room mother contacted all the other parents and sent out papers for each of my students to complete, telling me about their favorite experiences throughout the year and what it meant to have me as their teacher,” says Brenn. “The papers were then compiled and laminated in a book for me, with each student’s picture and writing. I will always cherish the time and effort that went in to creating that special keepsake.”

Volunteering

Grand gestures during holidays and special dates are fine, but the teachers we spoke with emphasized that they like to feel appreciated year-round — and one of the biggest ways is by getting involved with class activities.

“Take a day off work and devote your time,” suggests Brenn. “Be a mystery reader; help with a craft or science project; be a chaperone on a field trip.”

Classroom Supplies

Can’t take time off work? Donate some supplies to the classroom; many teachers end up purchasing some of these out of their own pockets, so helping them stock up on tissues and crayons — or a bigger ticket item, like the electric pencil sharpener that Brenn was gifted one year by some class parents — can be a huge relief.

Helping with supplies helps teachers save some of their own money, of course, but it also makes them feel appreciated, knowing parents and students have really listened and paid attention to their needs and wants.

A Little Pampering

Michelle Holmes, a preschool and pre-kindergarten teacher in Plano, Texas, and her colleagues once each received chair massages as gifts — and she loved hers. Before Brenn’s wedding, her class’s parents threw her a surprise bridal shower. Teachers work hard, and to show them you know that, consider something that makes them feel special or pampered.

Sounds pricey? It doesn’t have to be. For many teachers, a hot lunch might be all it takes to feel like they’re indulging. “Our lunch block is never long enough to leave to go get food, and it’s usually filled with tasks like making copies, using the restroom, and returning emails,” says Karen Mensing, a first and second grade teacher in Phoenix. “Contact the teacher in advance to check for allergies and preferences, and swoop in at lunchtime with a burger, salad, or slice of pizza and beverage. It’s a treat every teacher I know would relish!”

Gift Cards

If you want to buy your child’s teacher a token of appreciation but you don’t know what to get, you really can’t go wrong with a gift card.

“If they feel the need to buy me something, I like gift cards to some place I can use,” says Leon Scott Baxer, a third grade teacher in Santa Barbara, California. “One year, parents pooled their finances got me a $100 gift card to a teaching supplies store. I was stunned and so very appreciative.”

Gifts

As for gifts themselves, the teachers all downplayed their importance — they were much more enthusiastic about the previously mentioned ideas (and, trust us, they’ve got enough candles, lotions, and “#1 Teacher” coffee mugs already).

You’re better off buying or making something more meaningful. “I have incredible pictures that my students spent hours on decorating my walls,” says Baxter. “We love creative projects that make us remember our kids even 20 years later and that we can tell were made from love.”

At Holmes’s school, during Teacher Appreciation Week one year, each teacher was given a vase, and each student brought a flower to put in it — they formed a beautiful arrangement. Another idea: Have each child bring the teacher a piece of fruit to fill a basket. Or have each kid bring a plant for the school garden.

However you choose to show your appreciation, remember this: “It’s not about the amount of money,” says Baxter. “For many of us, if there’s heart behind the gift or if it’s something that we can truly use, we will talk about it for years.”

APHS puts on show for Arno

Mrs. Solak recently partnered with Mrs. West from APHS to put on a production of “Winter According to Humphrey”, which was the book that we did in March for our One Book, One School program.  The student were fantastic and all of our kids really enjoyed the performance!  The high school students had a big job- know the book, interview students, write a script, build a set, and of course, star in the play.  Thank you to all who were involved!

Young Fives

Early learning is a key component to the success of each and every child – the earlier we can provide solid educational opportunities to our younger learners the better.  With that being said, we are very proud to announce that the Allen Park Public Schools Board of Education approved the expansion of the Young 5’s Program held at Lindemann (currently for the district) to Arno Elementary and Bennie Elementary starting with the 2018-19 school year.

Please share this information with friends and neighbors in the APPS boundaries with young children getting ready for school this fall!

Registration is still open for screening for the district’s Young Five’s Program.  Ideal candidates for the program are turning 5 years of age between July 1 and December 1.  (December 2 and later are not eligible and consideration will not be given to students born before July 1).  The Young Five’s Program is currently open for residents of Allen Park Public Schools.

March Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) Tips!
In school, our Cougars are working hard to show positive behaviors. They work on responsibility, respect, and safety. Creating expectations in classrooms and common areas throughout our school helps our students learn and develop positive behaviors, social skills and great experiences. Did you know that you can use the PBIS system at home? Setting expectations for your daily routines can make a HUGE difference in behavior as well as help your morning and evening routines run more smoothly.
Here is an example of a “Home” PBIS expectations Matrix:
Here is an editable matrix that you can use as a tool to foster positive behaviors at home:

District Communication on Young Five’s

Please share this information with friends and neighbors in the APPS boundaries with young children getting ready for school this fall!

Registration is still open for screening for the district’s Young Five’s Program.  Ideal candidates for the program are turning 5 years of age between July 1 and December 1.  (December 2 and later are not eligible and consideration will not be given to students born before July 1).  The Young Five’s Program is currently open for residents of Allen Park Public Schools.

(Kindergarten Enrollment Info is also attached)

Young Five’s or Kindergarten?

Children enter kindergarten with a range of skills, including physical, cognitive, social, and emotional. Often, children who turn five years of age later than their peers will have a significantly different level of development than a child approaching their sixth birthday. For this reason, we offer a Young 5’s Program.

The program is designed for students who have a summer or fall birthdate. The focus of the program is to provide eligible children another year to learn and grow, helping to prevent them from experiencing the frustration of the high demands of kindergarten when they are not ready.

This program does not replace preschool or kindergarten; rather, our Young Fives Program offers an additional year as a gift of time. Enrollment in the Young Fives Program is a decision made in collaboration between parents, teachers, and administrators that begins with a screening process.

Students enrolled in the Young Fives Program have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities designed to bridge the gap between preschool and kindergarten. Students engage in activities that teach thinking, reasoning, and decision-making skills. They also develop their listening, social/emotional, and literacy skills.

The Program allows children to use a hands on approach to learning. The curriculum is similar to kindergarten but moves at a slower more manageable pace. This program provides a strong foundation that helps children become more successful students and ignites a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.

Arno Data

As part of our ongoing commitment to the analysis of student data for continuous improvment, I wanted to share this with our community.  This data report is for Winter 2018, after our latest round of assessments that include DIBELS (Reading), DRA (Reading) and NWEA (Reading and Math).  We are especially proud of our numbers as we have seen significant growth since fall, and we are on track to meet our targets.  The data is broken down by Tiers-

Tier 1- The Core- this is where we want at least 80% of our kids to be at or above grade level by the end of the year

Tier 2- This group should lower down to 15% of the building by year’s end.  This group maybe slightly below level, and receives additional instruction

Tier 3- This group should be down to 5% or lower by year’s end.  This group can be 1 or more years behind academically, and requires more intense intervention.

The key data markers by winter- we would like to see Tier 3 shrinking, and Tier 1 growing.  If you have any questions on the data, please contact me at 313-827-1050

Here at APPS, we take our meal service seriously by providing the best quality food that lines up with federal nutritional guidelines.  If you have never given our breakfast or lunch program a try, it’s always a good time to start.  Breakfast starts around 8:10 in the morning (You can drop off early and get the kids in a warm place) and of course we have our hot lunch and salad bar available every lunch time.  Please see the flyer for more information- did I mention that every Friday a.m. breakfast time also includes some fun dancing?

PBIS at conferences- we need help…

Dear Families,

The PBIS Committee will be selling hearts, smencils, and car clings during our upcoming conferences. We are in need of a few parents to run our table for us. If you are interested and available, please sign-up. The PBIS table will be outside of the office near the gym. Thank you for your consideration.

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e44a8ac2caaf85-pbis

The shout-out hearts can be purchased for $1.  We will be decorating the entrance hallway with love to our students from their families.  Purchase your student(s) a heart and greet them with love every morning!  These hearts combined with the sale of Smencils ($1), Smens ($2), and car clings ($5) help fund the fantastic incentives and rewards that our Caring Cougars earn through their positive behaviors!

Parent Surveys

It’s that time of year already in our school improvement planning where we need to send out surveys to our Arno stakeholders.  You will have the opportunity to take a brief survey from the State of Michigan rating some of your experiences here at Arno.  The survey will be available  Jan 29 to Feb. 9.  We will be providing the link to it via email blast on that day, as well as posting it in the blog below.  If you are unable to access via computer, we will also have a computer set up in the office if you wish to take it there.  Giving us good feedback helps us plan better to meet the needs of every Cougar stakeholder.  In addition, students and staff also take a similar survey during the school day.

All of the feedback you provide is then summarized and becomes part of our school improvement plan for the 2018-19 school year.  Thank you very much, please click on the link to start the survey:

STAYING HEALTHY

Winter time brings some additional challenges to school aside from the cold and snowy weather.  Below are a few reminders for helping our students to stay safe and healthy at school:

  • Wash hands frequently — especially after using the restroom, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Cover your cough — cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue.
  • Encourage children to put hats and gloves into coat sleeves when hanging among others’ items.

Below is some information about head lice, shared from our Wayne RESA Nurse Consultant, Terri Czerwinski.
