Parent Surveys

It’s that time of year already in our school improvement planning where we need to send out surveys to our Arno stakeholders.  You will have the opportunity to take a brief survey from the State of Michigan rating some of your experiences here at Arno.  The survey will be available  Jan 18 to Feb. 7.  We will be providing the link to it via email blast on that day, as well as posting it in the blog below.  If you are unable to access via computer, we will also have a computer set up in the office if you wish to take it there.  Giving us good feedback helps us plan better to meet the needs of every Cougar stakeholder.  In addition, students and staff also take a similar survey during the school day.

All of the feedback you provide is then summarized and becomes part of our school improvement plan for the 2018-19 school year.  Thank you very much, please click on the link to start the survey:

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Winter conferences are coming up quick on February 6 and 7 from 5:00-7:30 each night.  This conference is slightly different in that not every family generally attends, but is still open as an option for all who would like a conference with the teacher.  Some fast facts:

1. If your classroom teacher is requesting a conference with you, you will receive a notice.

2. If you did not receive a notice from the teacher, you may still request a conference with the teacher OR decide that you don’t feel a conference is necessary at this time.

3. All classroom links will come from the teacher and be live on this Friday’s  blog release to sign up for a time on signupgenius for those who need to attend conferences.

4. Report Cards go home on March 15

**Once again, please do not sign up for a slot on signupgenius if a conference is not needed at this point.

You are cordially invited to participate in a unique program presented by the Allen Park High School Drama Club that will pair books, one of our favorite Disney Princesses and an opportunity to create a deeper love for reading in elementary aged students.

Parent Requirements: If you choose for your child to participate, you will be asked to help them in two ways.  The first is for them to keep a reading log showing at least 20 minutes of reading per day for the length of the program.  The second is to bring them on four separate Saturdays to the Allen Park Center for the Arts for a read-aloud with Ariel and her friends from The Little Mermaid.  At these events, students who bring their reading log will be able to choose a free, new book to take home.

Student Requirements: Students will keep a reading log showing at least 20 minutes of reading every night beginning January 26.  Join us on four Saturday mornings sit with Ariel and her friends as they read a story.  After Storytime, students will get their logs stamped and be invited to choose a book to take home, free of charge (total of four free books per participating child).  Students who complete the program will be given a free ticket to our stage production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid on their choice of performance dates: March 15,16,17, 22, 23, 2019.

Storytime dates are:

January 26, 2019 @11:00 a.m.

February 9, 2019 @11:00 a.m.

February 23, 2019 @11:00 a.m.

Keep Skills Sharp During Winter Break

Help your child stay at the top of his learning game during the holiday vacation no flashcards involved!

unimpressed reading GIF by SpongeBob SquarePants

Winter break means a well-deserved reprieve from homework and daily obligations. But before you know it, the holidays will be over and it will be back to the bus stop. To prepare for a smooth re-entry and a successful second semester, don’t let school skills like reading, writing, and math slide completely during winter vacation. Try these family-friendly activities to keep skills sharp:

  • Read for pleasure. Whether your child is in the mood for holiday stories like The Night Before Christmas or the newest installment from his favorite series, winter break provides the perfect opportunity to stash schoolbooks and read for fun. Encourage relatives to give books as holiday gifts or gather in front of the fire (big kids too!) to take turns reading from classic tales.
  • Cook up an easy lesson. Invite your child into the kitchen to help you whip up a special dish — from Christmas cookies to potato pancakes. All of those half-tablespoon and quarter-cup measurements are great practice with fractions.
  • Write thank-you notes. Penning notes of appreciation to gift-givers teaches gratitude and helps polish writing and spelling skills. Not sure what to say? Check out our thank-you note template for wording. One final tip: a mug of hot cocoa can make this task feel more festive!
  • Make the most of car rides. Turn the drive to or from a holiday get-together into an opportunity to practice letters and numbers. You can look for license plates from different states, try to find the alphabet on the license plates, or count the number of red (or white or green) cars you see. For another take on this fun idea, you can have your kids play license plate bingo with this free printable.
  • Maintain reasonable bedtimes. With no school to get up for in the morning, it can be tempting to let kids become night owls. A few days before school starts up again, ease back into the regular bedtime schedule so your child can start the year bright-eyed.
  • Ask for grocery list assistance. Have your child help choose what to buy, decide how much you need, check your supplies to see what you’ve already got, write or draw pictures on the list, and sort coupons.
  • Let kids help with online shopping. Need a last-minute gift for Grandma or Uncle Joe? Log onto your favorite shopping sites and let your child help you select presents. This helps children work on their computer and research skills.
  • Have a family game night. Chances are many of your family’s favorite board and card games reinforce skills such as counting, reading, and drawing. Gather the group to play games you usually don’t have time for on school nights.

Health Corner

Winter time brings some additional challenges to school aside from the cold weather.  Below are a few reminders for helping our students to stay safe and healthy at school:

  • Wash hands frequently — especially after using the restroom, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Cover your cough — cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue.
  • Encourage children to put hats and gloves into coat sleeves when hanging among others’ items.

Please report all cases of communicable illnesses or circumstances to our office when reporting your child’s absence.

** Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.

** Students who have been treated for head lice must have a head check in the office before returning to class, even if the head lice was discovered over the weekend.

By reporting these things to our staff, we can limit the spread of germs and other things.  The two attachments contain additional information that may be helpful to you.  Please know that information related to illnesses is kept confidential.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER

Brr!  The weather has turned chilly!  Although our afternoons are often warmer than mornings, please send your child to school with a warm coat daily.  We definitely want to take advantage of the sunny fall weather to play on our playground and with our fun new equipment, but need to be dressed appropriately!  It’s always a good idea to dress in layers to adapt to changing temperatures.  Please label your child’s jackets and sweaters so they can find their way back to their owners if left somewhere.  The Lost & Found is currently full of items needing to be claimed!

Board Recognition

Last blog we let our families and staff know that our social worker, Sandy Bennett, was awarded a Career Achievement Award at her state conference.  During the November Board meeting, she was recognized for her efforts and her outstanding work she does to service our Allen Park students, parents, and staff.

The Career Achievement Award is a prestigious honor, not annually awarded by MASSW.  In fact, there have been only 5 in the last 70 years and our Sandy is now one of the elite!

This award is reserved for recognizing an individual who has demonstrated exemplary services as a School Social Worker over a significant period of time, has developed creative programs, services, and/or interventions to improve or enhance the lives of children and families in the State of Michigan.

Congratulations Mrs. Bennett!!

Congratulations Sandy Bennett!

While attending the annual Michigan Association of School Social Workers State Conference in Kalamazoo, our very own Sandy Bennett was awarded the Career Achievement Award at the banquet last evening – it was a complete surprise to her!

Sandy Bennett has contributed significant time and effort to advance the visibility and viability of School Social Work throughout the State of Michigan through involvement on MASSW local and state level Boards, political action and advocacy and teaching, instructing and mentoring School Social Work interns and School Social Workers.  Sandy’s career spans 4 decades and she has been with Allen Park Public Schools for over 20 years.  Sandy’s professional contributions have been significant and far reaching, spanning across the State of Michigan and extending throughout the entire Midwest Region; devoting innumerable hours in support of her beloved profession of School Social Work.

It is with a tremendous amount of pride that we congratulate Sandy on this prestigious and well-deserved honor.  Please join the Allen Park Board of Education on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Allen Park High School, Large Group Instruction Room, as we honor and celebrate Sandy Bennett!

Building up to Kindergarten

We had a terrific turnout for our second annual Preschool meeting with parents and their preschooler.  This is an event that is open to all of our local preschools in the area and is designed to give parents a better understanding of the skills that their child will need as they enter kindergarten next fall.   We had amazing 41 families from various preschools attend the event, more than double the amount over last year.

A huge thanks to our Kindergarten staff , Nickie Stanley, Cristina DiCarlo, and Megan Johnson, for an excellent job on helping our future kindergartners be better prepared for next year.

The presentation slides can be seen below- there will be Part 2 of Building up to Kindergarten in the winter.

Therapy Dogs arrive for Arno literacy program

The main objective of this program in our Y5 and 3rd grade classroom is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading.

By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.

Arno Cougar Super Summer Readers

Our Book Swap at Arno was a huge success with so many of our readers visiting the building throughout the summer.  Many of our students returned their reading log in addition and we were able to pass out lots of rewards.  One of the rewards was for our Top Readers- They received a 30 minute recess with the principal and a cool popsicle this past week.  They are all pictured below

Pop Can Tabs

Madeline Every has been collecting pop can tabs at our schools to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Detroit for a number of years now and she continues this very important effort.  There will be a collection box in the office where you can drop off pop can tabs off to support her favorite charity.

MSTEP Parent Guide

M-STEP Results: What Families Can Expect

This past spring, Arno Elementary students in grades 3-8 took the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress). Final results from the  M-STEP are now available and thanks to technology improvements and online testing, our district has much earlier access to data that is also a more precise measure of learning.

The purpose of these state summative assessments is to see how close our students are to reaching Michigan’s new higher standards in English language arts and mathematics.

This year’s test scores will build on the new baseline set in 2015 when the M-STEP was brand new. This year’s results show an improvement in most areas,  we expect that as students gain more and more experiences with online assessment and as our instruction adapts to Michigan’s higher standards, our scores will rise over time. We encourage families to remember that state standardized test scores are just one measure of student progress and to keep them in perspective.

What happens next?

Our staff will spend time reviewing the 2018 M-STEP results to find where we are having success, and where we see areas in which to improve. The test results also will reveal which groups of students are doing well, and which will need more or different kinds of support.

Families are encouraged to review the M-STEP Parent Report and learn where your child might need additional support. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher and learn how together you can target academic support where it’s needed most.

The Michigan Department of Education has developed a useful document called Student Testing: What Parents Can Do to Help Students Prepare that is now available for download on the M-STEP web page (www.michigan.gov/mstep).

Please look for your child’s Parent report coming soon around Sept. 28.

Traffic Pattern

Parking/Drop-off

As we all need to get our children to school, safety is always the primary concern.    We will do our best to help ensure an orderly drop-off/pick-up daily, but we need your help in making that happen.

** No child should run across the street to get into a car.

**Help our traffic issues around school by parking a block or so away and WALKING your child before and after school.

**School traffic flow MUST go clockwise around the school. Make sure that your passenger door is ALWAYS closest to the curb.

BE SMART! BE PATIENT! BE CARING! BE KIND!!! BE RESPONSIBLE!!

Important info related to school illness

This school year we have  students that have immune issues to illnesses.  Please be sure to keep your child home if they are experiencing contagious symptoms, especially if they have a fever.

Thank you for your help.

Mad Science

We are happy to be partnering with Mad Science to bring an after school experience to Arno students who wish to dive deeper into the fun of science.  A flyer will be sent home detailing the specifics of this class- which is tuition based ($85 early, $90 later) and will be held at Arno after school once a week- for 6 weeks.  Mad Science did provide for us a free science assembly to which was a lot of fun and motivating towards science!

Therapy Dogs for Reading

Coming soon- Arno students in Mrs. Wrneck’s, Mrs. Haskin’s, and Mrs. Jensen’s room will have an opportunity to read to a therapy dog.  There is research that supports the connection to confidence boosting for kids when they can read to a four legged friend.  If the program is successful, we will expand it.  The dogs are very local (3 blocks away) and are fully licensed therapy dogs that even visit places like Children’s Hospital to cheer up patients.  Permission slips will go home in those classrooms.

Vocab Program

Arno Elementary is taking on a new innovative angle on learning vocabulary words. In addition to their classroom work on vocabulary, students will also watch a vocabulary segment on Arno’s Morning Broadcast. However, these segments feature not only students, but highlight teachers, staff, parents, community and business members, government officials, and friends of Arno, both new and old. The students will enjoy visually learning from a new guest speaker teaching them Marzano’s English Language Arts Vocabulary words while utilizing graphic organizers to cement learning

Journeys

This year AP Elementary buildings started a new reading program titled “Journeys”.  The program encompasses the very best in reading practices and we are excited to roll out with our students.

PBIS

Arno was alive with activity last Thursday as each class made their way around the building and outside to attend PBIS expectation stations in Assemblies, Bus, Office, Hallway, and Cafeteria.  Our Cougars were great listeners and learned some important information about building expectations and positive behavior.

Mr. Peace

Arno was once again treated to Mr. Peace (compliments of the PTA), this time it was the very important topic of bullying.  He shared stories, quotes, and inspiration to our Cougars.  Please be sure to ask your child what they learned about being kind and always looking at other people’s heart first.
