Hearing screens at Arno have been completed for this school year. Kindergarten, first, second, and fourth grades participated in the hearing screening process. Any child in third or fifth grade who failed the school hearing screen last year was likely re-screened this year. If your child did not pass the hearing screen, you have likely received a letter from the Wayne County Health Department already. Many, but not all, failed hearing screens are a result of middle ear fluid/ear infections. Follow-up with a doctor is recommended, and the letter includes a section for a physician to complete following the examination of your child. The completed letter should be returned to the Wayne County Health Department. If a parent or teacher has concerns regarding a child’s ability to hear, please contact Lesli Sutherland, hearing consultant for the district: (734)692-4618; suthe
Second grade got a real treat last week when they participated in Christmas around the world stations. The group went from country to country, learning facts about how they celebrate differently from us, like shoes left by the fireplace to put presents in. Learning fun!
Students from Mrs. Kalis’s class and Mrs. Jensen’s class buddied up for some December exercise as they enjoyed some volleyball. Great fun and friendship was had by all
Winter break is right around the corner, and holidays can get pretty hectic! Routines can fly out the window with celebrations, travel and out-of-town guests. As your family prepares for the holidays, use these tips for keeping kids engaged in learning and reading over winter break.
Remember, you don’t have to be an expert to help your child with reading. By simply interacting with children around books, you can show them that books are important and worthy of our attention.

It was great to see so many families out for parent/teacher conferences. As research has shown, a strong home-school connection is critical to a student’s academic success! If you ever have questions or concerns, please be sure to contact your child’s teacher.

Dear Caring Cougar’s,
The AP high school counseling department reached out to our PTA. They informed us their food pantry supplies are running low. At APHS food pantry they provide food & necessities confidentially for families of AP students that are dealing with unforeseen circumstances, some of which have been tragic.
At our last PTA meeting members decided to support this cause in two ways. The Arno PTA received a $300 Consumers Energy Grant last year from one of our members for their volunteer service. We voted to allocate these funds to the pantry in the form of $300 worth of Kroger Gift card to assist in their inventory needs. We also decided to place a box in our main office to collect items from now through December. Students and staff can drop donations off and a PTA member will transport it to the HS pantry as our box fills up.
Suggested Items Need; cereal, cereal breakfast bars, pop tarts, canned vegetables, canned fruits, tuna, pasta and spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles (or something similar that’s a quick fix meal) and any type of snacks. Personal hygiene products and socks.
Thank-you in advance for your partnership on this. We are excited to kick off the holiday giving season by supporting the kids in need within our district.
Sincerely,
Your Arno PTA
We are humbly amazed at the amount of donations already cming in for APHS food drive. Here’s a pic of our 1st load from Arno & a pic of our districts sweet ‘lil pantry. December 18th will be the last day we are accepting donations in order to get supplies delivered to HS, sorted & distributed to those in need.

Happy Friday!
Parent/Teacher conferences are just around the corner on Nov. 8th (5:00-7:30) & Nov 9th (12:45-3:15 & 5:00-7:30) . There is a half-day that morning with dismissal at 11:40. If you have yet signed up for a time slot, please see the links below to reserve your time. A strong home connection is a critical part of the education process, making it very important for everyone to connect with their child’s teacher. This year, the district moved to tri-mesters to align closer to our assessments which are given three times a year as well. Although report cards don’t come out until early December, your child’s teacher will go over your child’s current progress and awnser any questions or concerns up to this point.
As the weather has now taken a turn to the cold, please remember to pack gym shoes on your child’s gym day if they are wearing boots, etc. All students need gym shoes to be able to particpate in the special.
Thursday evening Arno hosted a parent meeting on the new 3rd grade reading law. I have attached the ppt. from that meeting for your review. If you have any questions please call the office.
We are seeking Cowboy and Cowgirls (volunteers) to help out with our Wild West Book Fair! Leave your electronics at home and come help us explore the world of books in our “Town” (Media Center)! All Wranglers who seek to help us with our shenanigans will receive $5 in scholastic dollars for each shift worked!
There are various Wrangling opportunities available each day (9:00-Noon and/or 1:00-3:15). Of course if you decide to join us for both opportunities, you will earn $10 in Scholastic dollars! Our wrangling stops at Noon-1:00 daily for Lunch or a Nap! There will be additional opportunities for an evening wrangling session on November 8th and 9th from 5:00-7:30 during conferences.
We look forward to Wrangling and Hootin’ and Hollerin’ with all our Cowboys and Cowgirls Big and Small!

A key ingredient for educational achievement is the parent-teacher conference, and to make sure they’re successful for both parents and teachers, we’ve come up with a list of what educators would like parents to know.
The first on the list: Show up, please!
“We know parents are busy, but it is important to carve out time to invest in your child’s education and ensure success at school,” said National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel. “To get the most out of parent-teacher conferences, parents need to take an active role in their child’s education year-round and come prepared to discuss how their child can reach their full potential.”
Here are the rest of our tips for parents:
Get Ready. Do your homework prior to parent-teacher conferences. Prepare by writing notes to yourself concerning:
Don’t be afraid to engage in a frank conversation with your child’s teacher. Your goal is to develop an action plan for your child’s success at school. Good questions to ask the teacher include:
Start immediately on the action plan you and the teacher put together. Discuss the plan with your child and track his progress. Stay in touch with your child’s teacher throughout the year with regularly scheduled “report card” conferences that can keep the communication lines open.
“Parents are the best resource for a child to make the grade,” said Van Roekel. “When teachers and parents work together, we can help a child have a successful school year.”
Greetings from Superintendent Darga,
I’m excited to announce that Allen Park Public Schools has an “Official Facebook Page”.
I will do my best to keep it updated with “All Things APPS”. I’ll also add in or share posts that I feel would be beneficial for you as a member of our school community.
You will also notice that I’ve linked my TWITTER account to the FB account. It’s important to me that I am visible throuhout the district. While visiting our schools I often take pictures. These photos are shared on Twitter to give a glimpse of what is happening in APPS.
I’m pretty new to most of this (Twitter & Facebook) and am open to suggestions. IF you would like to see information on certain topics posted, please feel free to send me an email.

Our district has been great at keeping us current, and there latest task was to replace an aging cart of chromebooks that were becoming useless in the tasks we needed them for. Our new HP cart for 5th grade is filling the need right away as our students were enjoying them just minutes after delivery. Thanks AP!

This past spring, Arno Elementary students in grades 3-8 took the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress). Final results from the M-STEP is now available and Thanks to technology improvements and online testing, our district has much earlier access to data that is also a more precise measure of learning.
The purpose of these state summative assessments is to see how close our students are to reaching Michigan’s new higher standards in English language arts and mathematics.
This year’s test scores will build on the new baseline set in 2015 when the M-STEP was brand new. This year’s results show an improvement in most areas, we expect that as students gain more and more experiences with online assessment and as our instruction adapts to Michigan’s higher standards, our scores will rise over time. We encourage families to remember that state standardized test scores are just one measure of student progress and to keep them in perspective.
Our staff will spend time reviewing the 2017 M-STEP results to find where we are having success, and where we see areas in which to improve. The test results also will reveal which groups of students are doing well, and which will need more or different kinds of support.
Families are encouraged to review the M-STEP Parent Report and learn where your child might need additional support. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher and learn how together you can target academic support where it’s needed most.
The Michigan Department of Education has developed a useful document called Student Testing: What Parents Can Do to Help Students Prepare that is now available for download on the M-STEP web page (www.michigan.gov/mstep).

Parking/Drop-off
As we all need to get our children to school, safety is always the primary concern. We will do our best to help ensure an orderly drop-off/pick-up daily, but we need your help in making that happen.
** No child should run across the street to get into a car.
**Help our traffic issues around school by parking a block or so away and WALKING your child before and after school.
**School traffic flow MUST go clockwise around the school. Make sure that your passenger door is ALWAYS closest to the curb.

In addition to the new staff introduced on the last blog, we now also have a new second grade teacher, replacing Jennifer Brown who has lef tthe district to pursue other endeavors. I am pleased to introduce Alexandra Cervantes to the Arno team. We are very excited to add her talents to our second grade team as she is looing forward to being in allen Park. You can read more about her below.
Hello! I am Alexandra Cervantes. I graduated from Allen Park High School in 2010 and I attended Central Michigan University where I received my bachelor’s degree in elementary education! I started teaching fourth and fifth grade in the winter of 2014 and I have been teaching for the past 2 1/2 years. I have taught third through fifth grades. This is my first year teaching second grade and I am loving every minute! I am so excited to be part of the Arno team this year! When I am not at school, I am most often curled on the couch reading with my cat, Trinket. I cannot start my day without a cup of coffee, and no day is complete without a little chocolate! I got married this past Labor Day weekend.
This will be my fifth year teaching ECP – I feel so blessed to be teaching in Allen Park, it is truly an amazing place! I was previously at Lindemann but am very excited to be at Arno-I did my student teaching here so I am coming back to where I started! I graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a major in Early Childhood Education and just this summer I completed my Master’s degree in Education with certification in Reading Specialist. My husband Nick and I are expecting our first child, a girl, this November-we are beyond excited to start our family! I look forward to a wonderful school year at Arno, I already feel very welcome here.
This year, Arno had students move through “stations” to hear all about the expectations in some areas that were outside of the classroom. Students visited the office, went on a bus, the cafeteria, assemblies, and finally hallway behavior. Please be sure to discuss with your child what they learned in each station.
