It has been my pleasure to spend this first year at Arno as your principal.  I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all the warm welcomes, friendly faces, and support I received from students, parents, and staff.  I am truly blessed to have been in such a place that cares so deeply about education, and each other.  As I reflect on the year, I have seen first hand the “whatever it takes” attitude throughout our halls in helping every one of our kids learn.   Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your child’s education and many blessings onto you for the next school year.

Thank you,

Stephen Zielinski, Principal

You know its the end of the year when…

If the entire class gets 100% on any assignment, Mr Creutz made an agreement to do something fun.   This is the first class that actually cashed in on the promise when they successfully completed a social studies assignment 100% across the board.  see if you can guess what he had to do…

IMG_1343

In case you missed it…

We had the pleasure of having current graduating students, who were also former Arno students,  march through our halls one last time to the sound of loud applause.   Some of the seniors even found a hand print on the wall that they painted so many years ago.  Congratulations to all of our AP High School graduating seniors.

No Backpacks please…

Please note that students may continue to carry backpacks through Monday, June 13.  They will no longer be allowed for the next 3 half days leading up to the last day.

Last week’s Schedule

Please remember that we have three half-days on June 14, 15, and 16.  Dismissal time is 11:40 each day, there is no lunch served on any of those days- breakfast continues as normal.  Latchkey service is available on those half-days.

5th Grade Leadership

Recently, a note went home to 4th graders asking them for 3 choices of leadership positions in the building, safety, mentor, and broadcast.  Please understand that we did our best to place kids, but it may not have been their first choice.  All of the roles are very important here, so we try to strike a balance for each area.  Thank you to everyone who opted for a position.

Arno Tentative Staff Schedule for 2016-2017

We are going to giving a big Arno welcome to Nickie Stanley, in kindergarten from Bennie.  Nickie is an excellent teacher and we are excited to bring her on staff for our kindergarten team.  On the opposite, we will be saying goodbye to Ashley Liedel and Samantha Yesh.  They have served the Arno kindergarten well over the past years and there skills will be missed.  Mrs. Liedel and Ms. Yesh are moving over to the Bennie Kindergarten program.

In addition, a new media technology special has been created by the district for students to learn 21st century literacy skills in technology.  Carrie Solak (former 4th grade) has been assigned that post.

The rest of the general and special education staff roster is below.

Fourth grade students participated in the Sea Grant Field Trip. This field trip incorporates science and social studies. Half of our day was spent on landside activities at Lake Erie Metropark, and the other half of the day was spent doing various activities on a boat trip along the Detroit River. A great day was had by all.

Class of 2016–District Building Parade

On Friday, June 3rd, we will initiate a new APPS tradition–a memory walk for our graduating high school seniors.  They will first report to the middle school and then proceed to the elementary they attended around 1:30, in full ceremonial attire.    The idea is similar to the clapping parade of 5th graders we have on their last day, so we will have them enter through the K doors and wind up through the 5th grade doors.

PTA Meeting Cancelled

Attention all PTA Members!
The PTA Meeting scheduled for Thursday, June 3rd has been cancelled. On behalf of the new Officers we would like to thank everyone for your support this year! Without your support there would be no PTA or PTA Events! We look forward to working with everyone next school year. Have a fun and safe Summer! We will see everyone in the Fall!

M-STEP is Done!!!!

Congratulations to our 4th graders for wrapping up their testing this week!  It has been so great to see how our Arno students have been so confident in their testing on computers for the first time on a state test- a testimony to all of the wonderful teachers and families we are blessed to have at our school.   Thank you so much for helping your children prepare for this challenge!  We are expecting some initial scores in August, we are not exactly sure of when the student reports will go home, but stay tuned.  Thanks and Congrats to all of our 3-5th graders on a job well-done!

Off to the River Raisin…

Our second batch of 5th graders recently took a field trip to the River Raisin Battlefield.  A little history of that battlefield area:

From January 18th to January 23rd, 1813, the north bank of the River Raisin became a battleground where the forces of the United States and Great Britain fought each other for the control of all of Michigan and the Lower Great Lakes.  At stake was the destiny not only of the 2 countries (United State and Great Britain), but also the future of Frenchtown, (known today as Monroe Michigan) and of Canada, and of Tecumseh’s alliance of Native-American tribes.

Author Lynne Smyles Pays Arno a Visit

Our upper grades enjoyed listening to another Michigan author on Friday.  Lynne Smyles, former school teacher, has written several books called “Michigan History Nightmares” and shared some of them with the students.  I am ordering 10 copies of each of her books if you wish to use them in group in the future (It will be in the book room Barb is getting together).

In addition, an order form went home today if the students wish to order a copy.  Lynne will be back next Friday to fulfill orders- please be sure that all book order forms are in by next Thursday, May 19

TEACHER REQUEST PROCEDURE

As we close one school year and begin to plan for the next, student placement is one of our primary considerations.  Our school team of teachers, administrator and social worker spend many hours working together to form classrooms for next year.  We strive to balance classrooms with a blend of students based on academic strengths and needs, social and emotional supports, and the unique personalities of each child.

If you have any special concerns about your child’s placement for next school year, please submit a written explanation of the concern.  For example, “my son is very active and needs to be placed in a classroom where he will have opportunities to move around” or “my daughter struggles with reading and needs a teacher with a strong background in reading”.

We do not/cannot accept any requests for a specific teacher.  Letters requesting a specific teacher will be returned.  The one exception is a request for your child to not be placed in a specific classroom based on previous first-hand experience you’ve had with a teacher.  And, that parent concern / issue should be documented in the office.  All such letters are due to the office no later than Friday, May 20, 2016.

This is the same procedure that has been used in previous years and is the same procedure used at Lindemann and Bennie.  If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please feel free to contact my office.

You’re invited to Arno Planting Day!

On Thursday, May 12th at 5:00pm we start off the evening with a pizza dinner in the caféteria!

During dinner, we will have Arno friends/families sign-up for stations around the school to help beautify!

After dinner, everyone will head to their stations with their gardening tools to pull weeds.

After weed-pulling is complete at your station, it will be time to plant, then mulch, your designated area. Please bring your own gardening tools! If possible, please indicate the plants and quantity below that you will be bringing so we can plan ahead the planting stations. If you cannot make it to the event, we will still accept and appreciate any plants you are able to donate.  These can be brought to school on May 12th.

Many thanks,

Arno’s Green Team

Teacher Appreciation Week

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  We get to celebrate all of awesome teachers and staff at Arno that make everything happen- everyday!  We could not be more proud of everything that happens in our building- walking in you can see and feel the passion our staff has to do our best for each and every child.  We are so excited to celebrate our superheroes- be sure to thank your teacher this week by sending them a message, or just stop by and say hello.

There is still time to sign up to help out with the luncheon on Friday.  Please see the PTA link below to help out- Thank you!

M-STEP

Congrats to our 5th grade once again.  Third grade started their M-STEP testing this week with English Language Arts and Math.  They will wrap it up next week with the Math Performance Task- everything has gone well so far and the kids are excited to get through it.

4th Grade will be starting their M-STEP on May 9

Please return the bottom portion NO LATER THAN May 6th, if you are planning to join us or send in a donation!

Many thanks,

Arno’s Green Team

Happy Friday!

This is a message from your FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT:

We are extremely sorry for any disappointment your child may have experienced today at lunch, when we ran out of the Blue Raspberry Slush Cups. We were unable to accommodate the unexpected very high demands. For the later lunches we were able to give out popsicles, but we understand the disappointment this may have caused for the students excited about the slush cups.

We truly understand the disappoint today,  but we will make it right by giving all three elementary buildings students a free slush cup next week.

Please call us here in the food service office with any questions or comments (313) 827-2185.

Again our sincere apologies,

M-STEP UPDATE

I could not be prouder of our 5th grade students!  Over the past two weeks our 5th grade Arno Cougars completed over 7 hours of state assessments.  Our students were tested in the following categories:

  • ELA Computer Adaptive & ELA Performance Task
  • Math Computer Adaptive & Math Performance Task
  • Social Studies Parts 1 & 2

I would also like to thank our staff and families for working together to prepare our students to be “test ready”.  Great things happen when we work together as a team!  As the building principal, I am excited to see our assessment results.  I will be sure to keep you updated.

We did have our state visit Thursday to observe testing and Arno came through with flying colors.  Way to go Cougars!!

Third graders are up next — beginning the week of April 25.

Important Project

Staff Appreciation begins May 2nd this year.  To help celebrate the staff at Arno, a special kids project for their teachers will be coming home next week.
In addition, the PTA is still looking for volunteers for the events that week.  If you are available, please click on the signupgenius link below.  Thanks for your support!

Kiwanis Grant

IMG_0906IMG_0909

Mrs. Jensen’s room recently received a $10,000 donation from the local Kiwanis that will go towards various items and funds that the students can benefit from.

In discussion with Dr. Sokol (Special Education Director), Ms. Noreen (OT), Mrs. Giannetti, Mrs. Coogan, and Mrs. Peyton,  the money will be put towards an incredible variety of items.  They have purchased Kindle Fires for each student to utilize within the classroom, weighted vests, compression vests, adaptive swing, steam roller, Physio ball seats, foldable wagon, and Magna-Tiles.  They are also continuing to look for other ways to incorporate technology into our classroom.  They have set up funds for field trips to offset the cost of the bus.  This allows the class to go on field trips relevant to their curriculum rather than only going when a general education class may visit.  We have also set up an ingredient fund to allow Kaite to cook in class based on our News-2-You topics.  They have also ordered a Boardmaker Online subscription and an updated Edmark Reading Program edition to enhance the curriculum.
This grant was celebrated this past Monday with Mrs. Jensen, the Board, and many of her students!

Earth Day

Arno celebrated Earth day today with numerous stations around the school with the Earth as the center theme.  Some of our stations included Magnifying glasses, Recycling Sort, Sidewalk Chalk Messages/Pictures about Earth Day, Garbage Pick-up, Re-purpose/Reuse, Earth Day Poetry, Living vs. Non-living, My Sensory Journal.   Thank you to all who helped with the set up for the great day!

M-STEP

Update on M-STEP- This past Monday, our 5th graders logged in and started their first on-line M-STEP assessment in English Language Arts, they followed with the ELA Performance Task , which involved more writing.  I have to tell everyone how proud I am of our students!  We won’t know results for a while, but they sat down and got through their tests like a pro!  The kids were focused and determined to meet any challenge thrown their way.  Great job 5th grade, it’s a great day to be an Arno Cougar!

M-STEP

As you all know, the MSTEP window opens this week.  This is the start of the window that lasts until the end of May and assesses English Language Arts, Math, Science (4th) and Social Studies (5th).  During this time, it is critical to have your child in school for their testing dates.  We do offer make-ups, but testing with their peers is a more beneficial environment.

It is also very important that your child gets plenty of sleep, has a good breakfast, and has a snack to eat if/when the class takes a break.  I am so very confident that our students are going to master this test and improve on our previous year’s scores!  Should you have any questions, please contact the classroom teacher or the office.

I will post the scheduled days for testing that week, as well as the grade level.  In the meantime, please take a moment to read a letter addressed to parents from our new State Superintendent.

Warmer Weather Check

Seems like we have been robbed of spring as of late, however, the warmer weather will roll around soon and kids will want to wear cooler outfits.   Please be sure to adhere to appropriate warm weather clothing and review the dress code for Arno from the link below.

Allen Park Elementary Honor Choir Concert

Congratulations to all of our talented singers in the Allen Park Elementary Honor Choir for a beautiful concert this past Tuesday evening.  Their voices sounded like angels as they alternated with the chime choir from Lindemann.  Congratulations also to Tracy Hoffman for his dedication in working with our kids after school to develop all of their talent to build up to a successful concert!
