Congratulations Mrs. Pushman, Mrs. Ellis!

IMG_0284Congratulations goes out to Mrs. Pushman for the Founder’s Day Award for Outstanding Educator 2015. This is a well deserved award for Mrs. Pushman’s hard work and dedication to her students, parents, staff, and her teaching craft.  Mrs. Pushman, along with other award winners from around the district will attend a dinner in their honor in February.

In addition, Congratulations to Mrs. Ellis for the Founder’s Day Distinguished Service Award.  She has been very active on the PTA and spent a lot time making sure our Arno Fun Run was a huge success.   Mrs. Ellis currently serves as secretary for the PTA, among other responsibilities that she gladly takes on for our kids.

Other results just released from our PTA:

Stephen Zielinski for the 2016 Outstanding Support Personnel
Barbara Pushman for the 2016 Outstanding Educator Award

Kiwanis donates dictionaries to all third graders

Kiwanis, which has been in Allen Park since 1939 and is celebrating their 100 year anniversary, came to Arno on Thursday to donate a new dictionary to every third grade student.  Dave Goodwin, who spoke with the classes indicated that this is the Kiwanis’s 10th year of donating dictionaries.  We thank Dave, Brian Goodmin, Tony Lally, Dean Settemy and all of Kiwanis for this great resource gift to our kids!

Holiday Giving

December brings around a wonderful time of year.  Unfortunately, many people do not have the ability to enjoy the season as much as others.

To make things a little bit easier for some families, we will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Christine Food Bank/Soup Kitchen.  The food bank provides non-perishable goods to families to help stretch their grocery budget.  The soup kitchen provides hot meals to school children that might not get one during the week.  The kid favorite…Spaghetti-o’s

Arno school families have always been generous in the past.  We are asking for donations of food to help brighten the holiday season for others.

In the spirit of sharing holiday warmth, we will also be collecting new, warm outerwear like hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves to share.

We are collecting through Wed.  December 15.  Your donation can be put in boxes if that’s easiest.

We hope that you can join us in this holiday tradition!

Safety and Security

Please remember that for security reasons, all parents wishing to enter the building during drop off, or other times during the day, must report to the office- even if it’s just a brief pop-in.  This is an important matter and we appreciate your cooperation.

Make it a great Cougar week!

Birthday Reminder

Just a reminder that as part of a healthier school, there are no sweet birthday treats allowed in the building.  Pencils, erasers, etc. are perfectly fine to bring as a “treat” for the class.

snow

Snow Policy

As we have already been hit with one snowstorm, more is always on its way.  As far as snow goes at Arno, please read the following:

1. As long as our play areas have been treated, we will continue to go out throughout the winter (as long as the wind chill/temp isn’t too low).

2. Students who wish to be in the snow should at a minimum be in boots and protective leg wear to keep them dry.  This prevents large amounts of students from needing a clothing change, and missing class time.   Students who are not wearing protective covering for the snow will be required to stay out of the snow for recess.

3. Snow stays on the ground.  Please talk with your child about the dangers of throwing snowballs, which can sometimes contain ice.  Students are free to build a snowman or snow fort, etc., things that keep the snow on the ground.

All of these rules apply before/after school, bus stop to walking home, and recess.

From the Art World…

Dear Arno families,

We need to express our overwhelming gratitude for your support of our Original Works art fundraiser!  We have raised over $1300 to put into the art program.  We had no doubt that this program would be successful here at Arno, but it wouldn’t be possible without such a supportive school community.
Orders will arrive mid-December, before we dismiss for Winter Break.

Sincerely,
Ms. Trapani and Mrs. Cunningham

Now Collecting…

Arno has a number of items that we collect to benefit the school and other organizations.   Please see below for more information.

Pop Tabs– Maddy Every (4th grader) collects pop tabs for a very worthy cause- The Ronald McDonald House.  Please consider collecting and sending in your pop tabs to help- Great job Maddy!

Box Tops –  Box Tops are found on hundreds of products.  Please clip the dotted line and have your child turn them into the office.  When they are submitted, the school earns 10 cents for each one received.  Over the past few years, Arno has been averaging approximately $1000 per calendar year.  This money is used to purchase merchandise and help to pay for special events that benefit the entire school.

Labels for Education- Campbell labels are found on many different products,  usually soup labels.  On those slips it will say either 1 point or 5 points.  Please cut the area out with the UPC code as well as the point value.  When they are submitted, we have the opportunity to obtain merchandise from a catalog that can be used in our school.

Conferences

This year for conference sign-up we have chosen to use a web based tool called signup genius.  Many of you may be familiar with it as a number of Arno staff and the PTA have used it in the past for various events.  Using this tool allows you to have the ability to choose times that are best for you while looking over the slots available, as well easily scheduling siblings.

Each teacher at Arno has their own signup genius link to click and choose times.  Simply choose the teacher and click an available slot, then go and repeat for siblings in other classrooms.  We will have a computer available in the office if you are not able to access the program.  There will not be any paper sign up this year

Remember:

  • To be on time
  • If you have more than one child, please don’t schedule back to back as you will need travel time to move around the building

Parent/Teacher Conferences

It seems like just yesterday that we were welcoming everyone back, and now we are already up to conferences.  Parent/Teacher conferences will take place on November 19th 5:30-7:30 and November 23 12:30-7:30.  Information will be coming home soon on how to sign up for a slot that works for your schedule.  We will be using Sign-up genius, a web-based program where clicking a teacher link will take you to the open time slots.  Information will be coming out next week in the form of an e-blast and blog posting with all the links for the building.  We are hoping for 100% participation so please be sure to read all of the information on how to sign up for a time.

Tips…

Top Tips for your Parent-Teacher Conference:

1.  Be on time!  Remember, 5 minutes early is ‘on time,’ and ‘on time’ is late.  Mark your calendar and set a reminder in your phone or on your computer.

2.  Be prepared!  Really there’s only one
question you need to ask your child’s teacher:  How can I best help YOU help MY child?  Have these other questions in mind, however, and be ready to LISTEN to your teacher’s answers, suggestions, and recommendations.

  • What would you say are my child’s strengths & learning opportunities?
  • How would you rate my child’s behavior and what does it tell you about my child’s learning style?
  • How should I track my child’s performance? Are there examples of my child’s work and is it completed on time and at an appropriate performance level?
  • Do you have suggestions for things we can do at home to better support my child’s learning? What types of books and educational games do you recommend for my learner? Is there a list of suggested readings?
  • How would you grade my child’s social behavior, do you have any suggestions for him or her when it comes to friends?
  • What am I not asking or noticing that I should be?

3.   Write it down!  Don’t hesitate to take pen and paper and write down important notes your child’s teacher makes regarding your child’s learning successes and areas of improvement.  Digest the discussion then refer to your notes at a later time to refresh.

4.  Share with your child!  Let your child know what YOU learned about his or her classroom successes and behaviors.  Note some of your favorite aspects of the classroom and what you liked most about the teacher. Take a camera and photograph favorite artwork you liked in the room!

Attending conferences might seem like just another bullet point on a parent’s already lengthy to-do list, but attending with the goal to enhance your parent-teacher relationship will make it a positive experience for everyone involved!

Fun Run Update

30 October 2015
On behalf of the Arno PTA, we would like to thank all of the families who supported this year’s Fun Run fundraiser
This year, 218 students and their families turned in pledges and combined we raised $9,002.00! This means that in only three years we have raised over $26,000 from one fundraiser.
It is our intention to use this year’s funds to further support the technology program and continue to bring programs and events that make Arno a great place to learn and grow.
And now to announce this year’s top fundraisers:
The top class was Mrs. Liedel’s kindergartners. They will be having a pizza party on November 4 to celebrate their accomplishment.
The top fundraisers by grade are:
Kindergarten: Alyssa Bommarito
1st: Jenna King
2nd: Antonio Kulaszewski
3rd: Savannah Hardy
4th: Vincenzo Kulaszewski
5th: Elizabeth Figurski
For the first time ever there was a tie for the top earners for the entire school- Brothers Antonio and Vincenzo Kulaszewski will each spend a day as Principal with Mr. Zielinski.
All top earners will also be treated to a lunch and limo ride with Mr. Zielinksi.
Congratulations and thanks again to all who made this year’s Fun Run a great success

Halloween Parade

Our Halloween parade is almost here.  Will kick things off at 1:30, make our way through the building and out to a playground loop (weather permitting).  All parents who wish to watch the parade should line up along the outside of the fence surrounding the playground, we will loop inside the fence along that way.  Watch for us come out of the 5th grade doors on Markese, then wind our way along the playground, ending up at the main doors of the building and dropping them back to their classrooms.  As a reminder, no inappropriate costumes or weapons- please leave masks at home as they pose a risk of tripping during the parade.

A Note from Mrs. Dalton, Physical Education Teacher

Please help your child remember to wear/pack their gym shoes on their scheduled PE day so they can safely participate in activities.  Also, if for some reason your child is unable to participate in PE due to injury/illness please take a minute to send in a note.  Otherwise, they will be expected to give their best effort in class.
Thank you,
Mrs. Dalton

Three Fires and 3rd Graders

The third graders participated in a presentation by the Huron-Clinton Metroparks Mobile Learning Center.  The program, “The Three Fires,” explored the lives of the Ojibway, Odawa, and Potawatomi Native American tribes in Michigan.  The children learned about the tools, shelter, language, and survival strategies through artifacts, replicas and demonstrations.  Hands-on learning included fire-making and pump drilling.

DTE Presentation with our 4th graders

DTE Energy THINK! ENERGY

Arno fourth grade students had a great DTE Energy presentation this week called THINK! ENERGY TAKE ACTION! This was a 60 minute interactive, hands-on presentation with a take home energy efficiency kit for each participating student. The program taught our students the importance of energy, natural resources and environmental resources, and gave each participating student’s family energy-efficient technologies to install at home.

fire

A Big Arno Thank You goes out to Allen Park firefighters Rob and Jason.  They recently came to Arno this week, gear and all, to demonstrate and talk about being safe and what to do if there was a fire to our K-3 students.   Arno students also got to enjoy their large remote control fire truck with none other than a Dalmatian driving it through the crowd.   Please take a moment to ask your child what they learned about fire safety and what you plan might be for getting out of your house in the event of an emergency.
