Parent/Teacher Conferences

It seems like just yesterday that we were welcoming everyone back, and now we are already up to conferences.  Parent/Teacher conferences will take place on November 19th 5:30-7:30 and November 23 12:30-7:30.  Information will be coming home soon on how to sign up for a slot that works for your schedule.  We will be using Sign-up genius, a web-based program where clicking a teacher link will take you to the open time slots.  Information will be coming out next week in the form of an e-blast and blog posting with all the links for the building.  We are hoping for 100% participation so please be sure to read all of the information on how to sign up for a time.

Tips…

Top Tips for your Parent-Teacher Conference:

1.  Be on time!  Remember, 5 minutes early is ‘on time,’ and ‘on time’ is late.  Mark your calendar and set a reminder in your phone or on your computer.

2.  Be prepared!  Really there’s only one
question you need to ask your child’s teacher:  How can I best help YOU help MY child?  Have these other questions in mind, however, and be ready to LISTEN to your teacher’s answers, suggestions, and recommendations.

  • What would you say are my child’s strengths & learning opportunities?
  • How would you rate my child’s behavior and what does it tell you about my child’s learning style?
  • How should I track my child’s performance? Are there examples of my child’s work and is it completed on time and at an appropriate performance level?
  • Do you have suggestions for things we can do at home to better support my child’s learning? What types of books and educational games do you recommend for my learner? Is there a list of suggested readings?
  • How would you grade my child’s social behavior, do you have any suggestions for him or her when it comes to friends?
  • What am I not asking or noticing that I should be?

3.   Write it down!  Don’t hesitate to take pen and paper and write down important notes your child’s teacher makes regarding your child’s learning successes and areas of improvement.  Digest the discussion then refer to your notes at a later time to refresh.

4.  Share with your child!  Let your child know what YOU learned about his or her classroom successes and behaviors.  Note some of your favorite aspects of the classroom and what you liked most about the teacher. Take a camera and photograph favorite artwork you liked in the room!

Attending conferences might seem like just another bullet point on a parent’s already lengthy to-do list, but attending with the goal to enhance your parent-teacher relationship will make it a positive experience for everyone involved!

Fun Run Update

30 October 2015
On behalf of the Arno PTA, we would like to thank all of the families who supported this year’s Fun Run fundraiser
This year, 218 students and their families turned in pledges and combined we raised $9,002.00! This means that in only three years we have raised over $26,000 from one fundraiser.
It is our intention to use this year’s funds to further support the technology program and continue to bring programs and events that make Arno a great place to learn and grow.
And now to announce this year’s top fundraisers:
The top class was Mrs. Liedel’s kindergartners. They will be having a pizza party on November 4 to celebrate their accomplishment.
The top fundraisers by grade are:
Kindergarten: Alyssa Bommarito
1st: Jenna King
2nd: Antonio Kulaszewski
3rd: Savannah Hardy
4th: Vincenzo Kulaszewski
5th: Elizabeth Figurski
For the first time ever there was a tie for the top earners for the entire school- Brothers Antonio and Vincenzo Kulaszewski will each spend a day as Principal with Mr. Zielinski.
All top earners will also be treated to a lunch and limo ride with Mr. Zielinksi.
Congratulations and thanks again to all who made this year’s Fun Run a great success

Halloween Parade

Our Halloween parade is almost here.  Will kick things off at 1:30, make our way through the building and out to a playground loop (weather permitting).  All parents who wish to watch the parade should line up along the outside of the fence surrounding the playground, we will loop inside the fence along that way.  Watch for us come out of the 5th grade doors on Markese, then wind our way along the playground, ending up at the main doors of the building and dropping them back to their classrooms.  As a reminder, no inappropriate costumes or weapons- please leave masks at home as they pose a risk of tripping during the parade.

A Note from Mrs. Dalton, Physical Education Teacher

Please help your child remember to wear/pack their gym shoes on their scheduled PE day so they can safely participate in activities.  Also, if for some reason your child is unable to participate in PE due to injury/illness please take a minute to send in a note.  Otherwise, they will be expected to give their best effort in class.
Thank you,
Mrs. Dalton

Three Fires and 3rd Graders

The third graders participated in a presentation by the Huron-Clinton Metroparks Mobile Learning Center.  The program, “The Three Fires,” explored the lives of the Ojibway, Odawa, and Potawatomi Native American tribes in Michigan.  The children learned about the tools, shelter, language, and survival strategies through artifacts, replicas and demonstrations.  Hands-on learning included fire-making and pump drilling.

DTE Presentation with our 4th graders

DTE Energy THINK! ENERGY

Arno fourth grade students had a great DTE Energy presentation this week called THINK! ENERGY TAKE ACTION! This was a 60 minute interactive, hands-on presentation with a take home energy efficiency kit for each participating student. The program taught our students the importance of energy, natural resources and environmental resources, and gave each participating student’s family energy-efficient technologies to install at home.

safety

You may have noticed that we have increased patrols around the school during the morning and afternoon by the Allen Park Police Dept.  As the weather continues to worsen, we will have an increase in the number of cars making their way around the building.  Please remember- there are no dropoffs on Markese.  Dropoff and pick-ups take place on Fox and Thomas.

Please remember there is no parking in the drop-off areas, and under circumstance should students be dropped off in the middle of any street to walk across.  Thank you for you cooperation.

fire

A Big Arno Thank You goes out to Allen Park firefighters Rob and Jason.  They recently came to Arno this week, gear and all, to demonstrate and talk about being safe and what to do if there was a fire to our K-3 students.   Arno students also got to enjoy their large remote control fire truck with none other than a Dalmatian driving it through the crowd.   Please take a moment to ask your child what they learned about fire safety and what you plan might be for getting out of your house in the event of an emergency.

safety

Please remember that all visitors must report to the office, this applies to the entire before, during, and after school time periods.  Also, please do not ask a student for entry if you are at one of the side doors.  They are instructed to not open any door and get an adult who will redirect to the main office.  We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining safety at Arno!

In addition to visiting, please once again remember that the drop off zone is in front of the building on Fox.  There is no dropping off, standing, or parking on Markese, this is potentially dangerous, especially when students are dropped off in the middle of the street.  We are still in need of many volunteers to help with traffic flow in the a.m. and p.m.   Please contact the office if you are interested.

Even though it sure doesn’t feel like the cold is coming, it’s surely on its way.  Please remember to dress your child appropriately for waiting outside in line, recess, etc.  We will always be outside unless there is inclement weather or a wind chill around 10 degrees.

Don’t forget our PTA skating party is from 6:00-8:00 this Thursday.  Parents must remain with their child and there is a charge for in-line skates.  Hope to see out there!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

On Friday, our elementary staff from Arno, Bennie, and Lindemann were hard at work here at Bennie creating math assessments to be used as a diagnostic tool in all grades.  By analyzing the data from these classroom assessments, our teaching staff will be better able to meet all learners at their specific level of need.  Mr. Darga, Mrs. Metzger, the principals of Lindemann and Bennie, and I  are very proud of our teaching staff and grateful to be working with such dedicated professionals for the benefit of all children.
