Door Security Concerns

As we are always ensuring safety and security at Arno, it is imperative that all parents enter through the main office doors if you have any needs in school.  Parents are not allowed to enter any of the side doors at any time, including morning line up.  We ask that you please also not ask safeties to open doors as this puts them into an uncomfortable spot as well.  Thank you for help in helping us be a safe school.

Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences are just around the corner on Nov. 8th (5:00-7:30) & Nov 9th (12:45-3:15 & 5:00-7:30) .  There is a half-day that morning with dismissal at 11:40.   If you have yet signed up for a time slot, please see the links below to reserve your time.  A strong home connection is a critical part of the education process, making it very important for everyone to connect with their child’s teacher.   This year, the district moved to tri-mesters to align closer to our assessments which are given three times a year as well.  Although report cards don’t come out until early December, your child’s teacher will go over your child’s current progress and awnser any questions or concerns up to this point.

YEE-HAW!

It’s book fair time! We hope that y’all have had an exciting October! Fun Run Prizes, Skate Parties, Super Cougar Lunches, Pizza Parties, PTA Meeting, and HALLOWEEN FUN for those of us that celebrate it!

Our Bookfair Kicks Off on Monday, November 6th with our first PREVIEW Day! Students will receive a Wish List in class the day of their Class Preview that they will fill out and bring home. Parents then have an idea as to what they would their students to purchase and can budget accordingly. For those students that do not have their PREVIEW Day on Monday, will get their chance on Tuesday, November 7th. PURCHASE Days will be WednesdayFriday. The Bookfair will be open from 9-Noon1-3pm, and 5-7:30 on Wednesday and Thursday and from 9-11 to purchase books on Friday.

If you would like to volunteer, please see the link below! Remember in order to sign up, you must be a member in “Good Standing” as per our By Laws.

Recently, the Allen Park High School Counseling Department recently reached out to our PTSA Council President, Bernadette Burgus informing her that their food pantry supplies are running low and they help. This pantry provides food and other necessities for families who are struggling to provide these basic necessities to their families. These families are dealing with unforeseen circumstances, some of which have been very tragic.

The Arno PTA Members voted tonight to help support the Food Pantry in the following ways:

*** The Arno PTA received a $300 Consumers Energy Grant last year from one of our members for their volunteer service. The members voted to allocate those funds to the pantry in the form of a $300 Gift Card. A member of the Executive Board will deliver that Gift to the person in charge at the High School next week.

*** A box will be placed in the Arno Main Office to collect items for the Food Pantry. A list of suggested items needed will be placed on the box and an email, facebook post, and blog reminders will go out as well.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of our FUN RUN WINNERS! We heard they had a fabulous lunch and an “unexpected” stop at McDonald’s for ice cream. Thank you for all of your hard work and support.

Our Fun Run was a HUGE SUCCESS, we raised over $19,000 and after all of our expenses, we ended up raising over $16,000. We really could not have done such an outstanding job without the support of our Arno Community!

Our Membership Drive has come to an end, but don’t worry, you can still become a PTA Member! Use the link below to sign up or pick up an application from the Bookfair to join! While you’re at it, we can help you link your Kroger Cards too!

The Winners of our Membership Drive were:

*** 1st Place- Mrs. Jensen’s Class! They received $100 in Scholastic Dollars and ear buds

*** 2nd Place- Mrs. Pushman’s Class! They received $50 in Scholastic Dollars and Emoji Pens

*** 3rd Place- Ms. Stanley’s Class! They will receive $25 in Scholastic Dollars, Stickers, and Licorice Erasers.

The 5th Graders are getting ready for Camp! In order to raise the funds needed for their 3 days of fun, they will be selling treats through Classic Recipes! If you would like to help support the 5th Graders please follow the link below and place your order.

Classic Recipes sells:

*** Cookie Dough (in tubs and proportioned)

*** Gourmet Popcorn

*** Pumpkin Rolls

*** Individual Personal Pizza Kits

*** Entertainment Book or Entertainment Book App

Thank you to everyone that attended our meeting tonight! We appreciate all of the support and ideas!

Tips for Parents on Parent-Teacher Conferences

How Should Parents Navigate This All-Important Meeting? Educators Show the Way!

A key ingredient for educational achievement is the parent-teacher conference, and to make sure they’re successful for both parents and teachers, we’ve come up with a list of what educators would like parents to know.

The first on the list: Show up, please!

“We know parents are busy, but it is important to carve out time to invest in your child’s education and ensure success at school,” said National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel. “To get the most out of parent-teacher conferences, parents need to take an active role in their child’s education year-round and come prepared to discuss how their child can reach their full potential.”

Here are the rest of our tips for parents:

Get Ready. Do your homework prior to parent-teacher conferences. Prepare by writing notes to yourself concerning:

  •     Any questions about the school’s programs or policies.
  •     Things you can share with the teacher about your child and his life at home.
  •     Questions about your child’s progress.

Ask Important Questions

Don’t be afraid to engage in a frank conversation with your child’s teacher. Your goal is to develop an action plan for your child’s success at school. Good questions to ask the teacher include:

  •     What are my child’s strengths and weaknesse.
  •     How does my child get along with classmates?
  •     Is my child working up to her ability? Where could she use improvement?
  •     What can we do at home to support what you are doing in the classroom?

Initiate the Action Plan

Start immediately on the action plan you and the teacher put together. Discuss the plan with your child and track his progress. Stay in touch with your child’s teacher throughout the year with regularly scheduled “report card” conferences that can keep the communication lines open.

“Parents are the best resource for a child to make the grade,” said Van Roekel. “When teachers and parents work together, we can help a child have a successful school year.”

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER

Brr!  The weather has turned chilly!  Although our afternoons are often warmer than mornings, please send your child to school with a warm coat daily.  We definitely want to take advantage of the sunny fall weather to play on our playground and with our fun new equipment, but need to be dressed appropriately!  It’s always a good idea to dress in layers to adapt to changing temperatures.  Please label your child’s jackets and sweaters so they can find their way back to their owners if left somewhere.  The Lost & Found is currently full of items needing to be claimed!

MSTEP Parent Guide

M-STEP Results: What Families Can Expect

This past spring, Arno Elementary students in grades 3-8 took the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress). Final results from the  M-STEP is now available and Thanks to technology improvements and online testing, our district has much earlier access to data that is also a more precise measure of learning.

The purpose of these state summative assessments is to see how close our students are to reaching Michigan’s new higher standards in English language arts and mathematics.

This year’s test scores will build on the new baseline set in 2015 when the M-STEP was brand new. This year’s results show an improvement in most areas,  we expect that as students gain more and more experiences with online assessment and as our instruction adapts to Michigan’s higher standards, our scores will rise over time. We encourage families to remember that state standardized test scores are just one measure of student progress and to keep them in perspective.

What happens next?

Our staff will spend time reviewing the 2017 M-STEP results to find where we are having success, and where we see areas in which to improve. The test results also will reveal which groups of students are doing well, and which will need more or different kinds of support.

Families are encouraged to review the M-STEP Parent Report and learn where your child might need additional support. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher and learn how together you can target academic support where it’s needed most.

The Michigan Department of Education has developed a useful document called Student Testing: What Parents Can Do to Help Students Prepare that is now available for download on the M-STEP web page (www.michigan.gov/mstep).

Please look for your child’s Parent report coming soon…

New Staff

In addition to the new staff introduced on the last blog, we now also have a new second grade teacher, replacing Jennifer Brown who has lef tthe district to pursue other endeavors.  I am pleased to introduce Alexandra Cervantes to the Arno team.  We are very excited to add her talents to our second grade team as she is looing forward to being in allen Park.  You can read more about her below.

Meet Alexandra Cervantes, 2nd grade

Hello! I am Alexandra Cervantes. I graduated from Allen Park High School in 2010 and I attended Central Michigan University where I received my bachelor’s degree in elementary education! I started teaching fourth and fifth grade in the winter of 2014 and I have been teaching for the past 2 1/2 years. I have taught third through fifth grades. This is my first year teaching second grade and I am loving every minute! I am so excited to be part of the Arno team this year! When I am not at school, I am most often curled on the couch reading with my cat, Trinket. I cannot start my day without a cup of coffee, and no day is complete without a little chocolate! I got married this past Labor Day weekend.

Meet Cassie Harrison, new ECP teacher (Previously at Lindemann)

This will be my fifth year teaching ECP – I feel so blessed to be teaching in Allen Park, it is truly an amazing place! I was previously at Lindemann but am very excited to be at Arno-I did my student teaching here so I am coming back to where I started! I graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a major in Early Childhood Education and just this summer I completed my Master’s degree in Education with certification in Reading Specialist. My husband Nick and I are expecting our first child, a girl, this November-we are beyond excited to start our family! I look forward to a wonderful school year at Arno, I already feel very welcome here.

Staff Changes for 2017-2018

We are excited to introduce new staff members to the Arno family this year- Andrea Alvarez (Speech) Cassie Harrison (ECP), and Sarah Andersen in 5th grade.  These teachers come to us with multiple experiences and bring with them the skills necessary to provide Arno students with an excellent education.  Please read Sarah’s and Andrea’s biography below for more on our new additions (Stay tuned for Cassie’s next blog).

Sarah Andersen

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Sarah Andersen, I am a new 5th grade teacher this year at Arno!  My undergraduate degree is from Eastern Michigan University and I am a certified Elementary Teacher (K-5).  I have had the wonderful opportunity to work for the district for the last ten years, and have spent much of my time at Lindemann over the last several years.

I am so excited for this new school year, and to get to know the students, staff, and families at Arno Elementary.  I am from Allen Park, and am an Allen Park High School graduate. I am so happy to be working in a community that I have always called home.  Thank you for welcoming me!

Andrea Alvarez

I started her career as a social worker working on life skills with youth and families in Southwest Detroit.  Some time later, I furthered my education and earned a degree in speech-language pathology from Wayne State University.  As a speech-language pathologist, I have worked with a variety of ages spanning from pre-school through high school.  I also have experience working with students who spend most of their time in a general education setting and also students that are in a center-based program.
I am thrilled to be joining the Arno team, and to meet all the students, as well as to an outstanding school year.

3rd Grade Reading Law

This past year, the legislature passed what is known as the Third Grade Reading Law.  This new law has many moving parts, see below for more info:

  • K-3 parents have to be notified if their child has a reading deficiency starting this year
  • Any student below grade level on reading (deficient) must have a school and home reading plan for success
  • By 2019-20 school year, any 3rd grade student one year or more below grade level as measured by a state assessment will be retained.  This year’s first graders will be the first group in third grade to be affected.
  • There are a number of ways to exempt the student from retention ie. parent waiver, shows better results on another local assessment, etc.

We will be developing the proper forms and meeting the requirements starting this year.  As always, we will provide quality instruction and interventions for all of our Arno students.  If you would like more information, please visit: http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2016/10/08/third-grade-reading-retention-bill-now-law-what-parents-need-to-know/

Line-up Procedures…

Line up procedures will remain the same as last year with indoor lineup with the exception of the first day of school– students will line up outside the grade level doors.   Indoor lineup will start on the second day of school.

  • The first day of school, line-up will be OUTSIDE their assigned door.
  • Indoor line-up starts September 6th
  • Outside doors are closed and will be opened at 8:20 daily for students to enter for indoor lineup, not before that time, however
  • Breakfast doors still open at 8:05
  • Students should still report to their assigned outside door to enter the building
  • Parents will not permitted to enter with students/stand in the halls- normal protocol to sign in with the main office does not change
  • Students will enter the classroom at the 8:30 bell after waiting in the hall

5 Ways to Have a Great First Day Back to School

You’ve read other lists, but here’s the REAL advice from ACTUAL teachers on how to prepare yourself and your child for a new school year:

  1. Encourage a work/play balance. Most parents don’t know that teachers actually want our students to have a comfortable work/play balance at home; meaning, we don’t want your child’s entire night devoted solely to reading and homework.  GASP!  No, it’s the TRUTH.  Run outside, join a club, play sports, try a new board game, help cook in the kitchen, make a craft, design, build, create – these activities actually help facilitate learning so leave time for them….PLEASE!
  2. How is your child going home?  We will (frantically) ask your child 720283465 times during the 1st day of school, ‘how are you getting home?’ This is by far the most challenging part of the first day; making sure each brand new face gets to their designated place (I’m officially coining that phrase).  After care, bus (including number or color and destination), bus after care, walker, car, or bike rider?  Know your plan and keep it consistent for week 1. Make sure your child feels confident that they know exactly how they’re getting home, whose getting them there, whose going with them (siblings or friends), and what will change if we’re involved in a rainy day dismissal situation.
  3. Start a NEW back-to-school tradition.  Make the first day of school more than memorable for your family.  Go out for ice cream, have a picnic at your favorite park, take a walk on the beach, or enjoy dinner out.  THIS is the beginning of a new year – set goals, make plans, and enjoy the newness of the fresh new year!
  4. Ask TARGETED questions.  Instead of “How was your day?” try these questions that are more likely to solicit better conversation about your child’s school day.  “What skill did you learn in math?”  “What books did you read/listen to?”  “What did you work on in fine arts?”  “Who did you play with at recess?”  Please I beg of you…never, EVER, under any circumstances, email, text, or utter the following words to your child’s teacher….”he said that you guys did nothing today”.
  5. Set technology boundaries.  Implement a time limit (1-2 hours a day) and encourage breaks (every 30 minutes).  Establish rules for who your child can message or chat with and encourage the use of the golden rule while using social media or chatting sites.  You can delete, but you never fully erase the words you type to someone.  Secure your child’s access by blocking inappropriate sites and using Google’s safe search.  Your school district’s website will have teacher approved websites that are designed to reinforce skills taught in the classroom.

Traffic Pattern

Parking/Drop-off

As we all need to get our children to school, safety is always the primary concern.    We will do our best to help ensure an orderly drop-off/pick-up daily, but we need your help in making that happen.

** No child should run across the street to get into a car.

**Help our traffic issues around school by parking a block or so away and WALKING your child before and after school.

**School traffic flow MUST go clockwise around the school. Make sure that your passenger door is ALWAYS closest to the curb.arno park

Scholastic Summer Reading Program

Please click the link below to enter reading information into your child’s digital reading log for our summer reading program

ARNO FAMILIES:

Summer reading is SO important! Our cougars have worked so hard to grow as readers this year. On Friday, June 2, a summer reading packet was sent home with each child grade kindergarten through 4th. We are working with Scholastic, who has provided usernames and passwords for each of those students, which can be found on a label on the front of the packet.  The students can log in with their information, and then log minutes spent reading this summer. There are incentives on the website for reading, and we are offering rewards for students who participate online OR return the attached reading calendars the first week of school. The goal is to have online participants, BUT, the reading calendars are another option that does not require internet access. The calendars can also be used to keep track of minutes, and the kids can log in at a later date to record online. There will be prizes for 250 minutes, 500 minutes, 750 minutes and 1000 minutes read. Students can start reading and recording minutes ASAP!

The Bedtime Hoops: 4 Important Questions to Ask Your Kids Every Night

Written by Christine Leeb

I love my kids, but by bedtime, I’m just exhausted.  At 8pm, my patience shuts off.  It’s like I have some sort of glitch in my mommy code, or maybe I just missed the patience upgrade with each kid or something?

So when I have to jump through so many drinks-of-water hoops, tickle hoops, tuck-in hoops, bedtime-song hoops, pee-pee hoops, and brush-your-teeth-already hoops, I feel that if they don’t get away from me as soon as possible, I’m going to jump through the I’ve-lost-my-mind hoop and escape into a dimension where only brownies, beaches, and books exist.

But that’s not reality! (Oh how I wish it was sometimes though—minus the losing my mind hoop).    The reality is that motherhood doesn’t stop at 8pm.  And even though some of the hoops I jump through annoy me, there are four hoops that I would never miss jumping through no matter how tired or impatient I feel…The 4-Questions Hoops.

I started asking my kids these four questions every night and it has changed our relationship.  It has brought us closer.  It has created a more positive shift in their focus throughout their day and in mine.

  1. What was your favorite part about your day?  This question allows us to jump through the hoop of positivity together.  It helps my children focus on the best parts of their day, and gives us another opportunity to reflect on them, laugh even more about them, and find joy in those special moments one more time before they close their eyes.
  2. What was your least favorite part about your day?  This question allows us to jump through the hoop of reality together.  No one is perfect.  Everyone makes mistakes, so it’s great to have the opportunity to be real and talk about those things in their day that didn’t go well—bad choices, disrespect, being irresponsible.  This question has allowed for me to model unconditional love and has given me many second-chance teachable moments.  Even if I lost my temper the first time around, I have one more chance to walk them through what they should have done differently.  It’s great for kids to be reminded that tomorrow is a new day to try again.
  3. Do you have any questions about your day? This question allows us to jump through the honesty hoop together.  It establishes a habit of always letting them know that they can ask me anything and can trust me to listen and love.  It shows them that I’m a “safe” person who isn’t going to judge or get angry or be upset if they want to talk about the tough stuff.
  4. How did you show kindness or love today? This question allows us to jump through the integrity hoop together.  It encourages them to be kind and loving to others even when no one is watching.  It is the most powerful, life-changing question I have asked!  My kids have learned just how simple it is and how capable they are of showing kindness or love every single day.  When I first started asking this question, my eight year old had trouble coming up with an answer, so I would step in to tell what I saw him do–he was thoughtful to take his plate to the sink, he played with his sister nicely, he gave his little brother a turn with his squirt gun, he washed his hands the first time I asked him to.  Creating an awareness of the little ways that he can show kindness and love has empowered him to do even more.  Plus, I find myself looking for those positive things that each child does throughout the day so I can share it with them that night.  They love hearing all the great things they’ve done.  Kindness and love…this is the focus I want my kids to have throughout their day!

The 4-Questions hoops have helped me learn more about my kids: baseball game play-by-plays, storm fears, favorite colors and movies. But I have also taught more to my kids:  answering questions about abortion, smoking, appreciating the differences in others and I’ll never forget the night we cried together about a little boy in a wheel chair.

Because of jumping through the 4-Questions hoops of positivity, reality, honesty, and integrity every night, I have laughed louder, cried more, snuggled closer, and taught lessons about life that I would not have had the opportunity to do in the busyness of the day.  Dear mom, at bedtime, won’t you join me in fixing that glitch in your mommy code, upgrading your patience level, bending your knees, and jumping through these four extra hoops with me every night too?  I promise that these are the hoops you will never regret jumping through for your kids.

5th Grade Graduation…

FIDGET TOYS

Many of our classrooms have fidget “toys” available for students who need them to maintain focus on work while expending energy in a quiet, personal way.  However, we have seen many fidget toys coming to school with students from home.  These fidget toys, designed to improve attention, are actually becoming a major distraction for our students at all levels.  Student attention is actually ON the fidget toys, rather than the lesson.  For this reason, we are asking that all fidget toys be left at home from this point forward.  If your child needs a fidget to do his or her best work at school, it will be provided by the teacher.  Thank you in advance for your support and understanding

Safety Town is an interactive safety awareness program for children from 5-6 years of age. Each day the children will be introduced to various safety issues in a fun and safe environment. The program is taught by a Police Officer and a certified teacher, with hands-on topics led by community guest speakers as well as visits from the Allen Park Police & Fire Departments. Teen volunteers from Allen Park High School lead the children through safety town every day and receive valuable training along with obtaining National Honor Society service hours. The children learn about stranger danger, water and beach as well as playground safety, fire safety, pet and bus safety, electrical and gun safety, and personal safety with an emphasis on pedestrian safety. The kids will be bicycling about a miniature town complete with streets, sidewalks, buildings, stop signs and a working traffic signal. Importance is placed on having the children memorize a cell phone number to call if they should ever become lost. We use fun songs to reinforce all of these principles and the children memorize our very own Safety Town Pledge!

From the PTA

Happy Friday

Just a quick reminder from the PTA that our Stevie B’s Fundraiser is next Tuesday, May 23rd from 11 am- 9 pm. Teachers EAT FREE and the class with the highest amount of participants gets a FREE PIZZA PARTY! Just let the cashier know when you order you’re from Arno and what teacher you have. If you have more than one child at Arno, you may split the number of people in your party. So, if you have a family of 5 and 2 students that attend Arno, you can give 2 credits to one and 3 credits to another or divide it up as you please. They also have a small arcade there and token purchases also account for credits as well!

Have Fun! Eat some delicious pizza and earn a free pizza party while raising funds for our kids at Arno!

Have a Great Weekend!

Great Job 4th and 5th Graders!!

What a great performance by our 4th and 5th graders at Tuesday evening’s concert performance with Mr. Hoffman and Mr. Skebo at the helm.  It was a great  Folk song theme, and the students did a great job with it!  Very impressed as always with our Arno talent!

High School Jazz Band Visit

We recently had a visit from the high school jazz band that rocked the gym with some great music!  Our 4th and 5th graders were treated to an awesome start to their day and we loved seeing some of our former Arno kids!

It’s that time again…

We are looking forward to another wonderful 5th grade graduation ceremony on June 14th at 9:00.  Following the ceremony there will be “picnic” for all the students with lots of yummy treats.  Please contact the office with any questions.

Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

M-STEP Is Almost Complete

3rd grade will be wrapping up  their testing on Monday and the whole building will be complete this year.  Our Arno students did a tremendous job despite the challenges of testing- we are so very proud of their effort!  Initial scores for the M-STEP will not be available until the fall, we will certainly inform you when the individual reports come out.
